Milano vs Zalgiris Preview
After losing to Crvena Zvezda at home last week, Milano players suffered a complete collapse on Tuesday when Real Madrid demolished them 106-77. It was probably the weakest performance of Giuseppe Poeta’s team this season, and they now sit at 11-12. Even though they are still only two wins behind the positions that lead to the play-in, Milano will have to find a strong rhythm very quickly, because a stretch of games in which they will be favored is coming up. If by the end of February they do not reach at least a 15-13 record, that will likely mark the end of realistic hopes for a top-10 finish. The final score in Madrid clearly showed how badly the defense failed and how much positive energy was missing. For most of the game, the impression was that Milano came to Spain for a sightseeing trip rather than to play a Round 23 EuroLeague game.
When a team loses by 29 points, talking about individual performances is unnecessary, but it is worth mentioning that Marko Guduric was the leading scorer with 15 points. The Serbian guard is clearly not performing at the level that was expected when he signed from Fenerbahce, even though he topped the scoring list in Madrid. Armoni Brooks has been the only Milano player lately who has consistently played outstanding basketball, while absolutely everyone else has gone through major ups and downs. There is practically no Milano player besides Brooks who has put together two or three excellent games in this campaign. Usually, they play one good game followed by two bad ones, and that applies to Shavon Shields, Zach LeDay, Devin Booker, and Josh Nebo. All of these names were supposed to guarantee much better results than what Milano have achieved in recent seasons, but the problems in this club clearly go deeper than just what happens on the court.
Zalgiris defeated Asvel on the road by 96-77 in the previous EuroLeague round and now stand at 13-10, which is enough for ninth place in the standings. The reigning Lithuanian champions fully took advantage of the unexpected absence of Glynn Watson in Asvel’s lineup. Without him, the opposing backcourt was mostly limited to Thomas Heurtel, which is simply not enough, even for a much lower level than the EuroLeague. With this win in France, Tomas Masiulis’ team kept their realistic chances of reaching at least the play-in this season alive, and if they manage to win one of their next two road games, those chances will become even stronger. After Milano, Zalgiris will also visit Baskonia in Vitoria, and there is no doubt they will travel to both games believing in the same outcome they achieved in Villeurbanne on Tuesday.
Sylvain Francisco led Zalgiris scorers with 20 points against Asvel, continuing his outstanding performances this season. Francisco holds all the keys to Zalgiris’ offense, and everything starts with him. He is almost impossible to stop in one-on-one situations and possesses all the necessary qualities on that end of the floor. The impression is that the absence of Nigel Williams-Goss has not negatively affected Zalgiris at any point, not now and not the first time he was sidelined this season. Moses Wright delivered another strong performance with 18 points, while Azuolas Tubelis once again finished in double figures. It is also important for Zalgiris that Maodo Lo regains some offensive rhythm. He has been playing with significant ups and downs, and it is crucial for him to be in a positive stretch now that Williams-Goss is out and every bit of help for Francisco is more than welcome. Looking at advanced statistics, Zalgiris have both a top-5 defense and a top-5 offense this season, so their current position in the standings might even undersell the true quality they have shown so far.
Milano vs Zalgiris H2H
Milano defeated Zalgiris on the road by 89-78 in the first part of the season, which was their second consecutive win in head-to-head meetings. Before that, the team from Kaunas had won five straight games in this matchup.
Injuries and Suspensions
Leandro Bolmaro, Stefano Tonut, Nate Sestina, and Ousmane Diop will not play for Milano. Nigel Williams-Goss is out for Zalgiris.
Where to Watch Milano vs Zalgiris?
Milano vs Zalgiris Best Betting Tip and Prediction
Milano are currently not in a good rhythm or momentum. Zalgiris, on the other hand, play with much greater toughness and have a clear identity, unlike their upcoming opponent. Looking at both teams, Francisco is without any doubt the best player on the floor, while Milano’s defensive aggression is nowhere near the level Zalgiris show on that end of the court. Because of that, we do not expect the home team to secure a routine win here.
