Monaco is seeking more time as the French champions continue working on a takeover plan ahead of the FFBB appeal decision on July 20.
The court hearing originally scheduled for July 10 in Monaco is not expected to bring an immediate decision, with the club reportedly seeking additional time to finalize its recovery plan and secure the financial guarantees needed to remain in French professional basketball, according to BeBasket.
The situation comes just weeks after Monaco celebrated its third consecutive LNB Pro A championship title, completing a historic season with four domestic trophies. However, the club’s financial issues have continued to create uncertainty around its future, despite its success on the court.
Monaco’s financial struggles threaten club’s future
The crisis began after the assets of Monaco owner Alexey Fedorychev were frozen due to sanctions linked to the conflict in Ukraine. The government of Monaco, through the Société Nationale de Financement (SNF), provided nearly €30 million in support to help the club finish the season, but that assistance ended on June 30.
Monaco’s total debt is currently estimated at around €25 million, creating serious concerns about the club’s ability to continue operating at the highest level.
The DNCCG, the financial control body overseeing French professional clubs, previously refused to approve Monaco’s participation for the 2026-27 season, citing insufficient financial guarantees and an incomplete takeover process.
Jamal Mashburn-led takeover plan under pressure
The proposed takeover plan, led by former NBA player Jamal Mashburn and a group of American investors, includes an investment estimated between €10 million and €12.5 million.
However, the financial authorities reportedly believe that the amount may not be enough to cover Monaco’s existing obligations and the costs of maintaining a top-level basketball organization.
The July 20 FFBB appeal hearing remains an important date for Monaco, as the club continues working on a financial roadmap and takeover plan in hopes of securing its place in LNB Pro A for the 2026-27 season.
Monaco prepares for uncertain new era
The financial crisis has already put Monaco’s entire future in doubt, with the club still uncertain whether it will be able to compete in France’s top division next season.
After losing its place in the EuroLeague and moving to the EuroCup, Monaco is now facing a major rebuild. It is difficult to imagine many, if any, players from last season’s historic roster remaining with the club, as the team prepares for a completely different era in terms of ambitions and structure.
