Moses Wright went through a real adventure this summer. After leaving Zalgiris too early – by his own admission – he signed with Barcelona, but that didn’t last very long.
The Spanish powerhouse ran into unexpected problems, which prompted Milano to pounce, pay the buyout clause in his contract, and bring Moses Wright into their ranks.
Before becoming one of the best EuroLeague centers, the 27-year-old began his European odyssey playing for Olympiacos, a club for which he holds only the fondest memories.
“I played for one of the most renowned clubs in the world. Everyone in Europe knows about Olympiacos. A few people in America know about it, too. So, just being a part of such a pristine program and having the championship mentality every single day, really pushed me to grow even further. The coaching staff and everybody was just welcoming. It was a great”, he told Milano’s official website.
Reunited with Alec Peters
While playing for a European giant like Olympiacos, he shared the locker room with another player who arrived in Italy this summer: Alec Peters, with whom he already built great chemistry back then.
“He was averaging 14 points the year I came. And I’ve never been around somebody that every time he shoots the ball I think it’s going in. So when I see AP (Alec Peters) shooting, I rarely crash the board like I normally do, because I think he’s such a pure shooter that every time he shoots I expect it is going in. But we had a connection. He threw me a couple lobs in Olympiacos. So we kept the connection alive here. It was just like being reunited with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. So it’s a great feeling.”
At Olympiacos, he didn’t manage to fully secure a starting spot due to the high competition at his position, which led to a transfer to Zalgiris with a clear goal in mind.
“The goal to go there and play a lot and play well. I always knew that from the little stints that I did in Olympiacos that I was going to make a name for myself in EuroLeague and I feel like that’s what I did. Now, I can just keep growing on that.”
EuroLeague promise
And that is precisely what he plans to do in Milano – a team that has struggled to reach the EuroLeague playoffs in recent seasons, a trend Moses Wright intends to change.
“I want to make the EuroLeague playoffs and build from there. Since I came here, I never missed the playoffs, so I don’t plan to start now. When I describe myself I say I’m a guard which is funny but I’m more of a pick and pop threat center than the traditional NBA style 5 that they’re looking for, more than a back to the basket guy”, he said.
