Murcia vs Zaragoza Preview
Murcia played in the Liga Endesa finals just two years ago and looked impressive at the time. The period from mid-November to early January was similar to that stretch, when they once recorded more than 20 consecutive wins across all competitions. This time, however, they have posted 14 wins in 15 games played in all competitions they have taken part in. Still, since the start of the new year, they have suffered a significant drop in form, losing three games in a row against Real Madrid, Gran Canaria, and Bilbao. As a result, they are now 10-5, but still hold a strong fourth position in the standings.
Everything that usually defines Murcia, namely phenomenal team defense and solid ball movement on offense with an emphasis on finding the best possible shot, was missing in those three games. That was partly due to the aggressiveness of their opponents, as well as the fact that their shooting was not at a high level. Murcia are the second-best defensive team in Liga Endesa, allowing their opponents just 106.8 points per 100 possessions. Offensively, their offensive rating stands at 116.2 points per 100 possessions, which is slightly above the league average. As a team, they shoot 33% from three-point range, which can be considered one of their weaknesses. David DeJulius leads the team with 14.8 points per game, followed by Michael Forrest at 13.2 points per game, while Dylan Ennis once again fills up the stat sheet, averaging 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.
Zaragoza this season, much like in previous years, play phenomenal basketball at times, with everything looking great, especially on offense, only for them to experience noticeable drops in performance, most often as a result of poor defensive engagement. In their last three Liga Endesa games, they have recorded two wins against Lleida and Gran Canaria, while suffering a loss to Valencia in a shootout, 115-73, where they were completely out of the game already by halftime. So far this season, they have won six games and lost nine, which is only enough for 12th place in the standings.
Just when it seems that Zaragoza could get involved in the playoff race, they tend to fall short against the best teams, and with the occasional slip caused by a lack of continuity, that playoff push turns into nothing more than a dream. They have a roster good enough not to worry about relegation, but at least on paper, this team should be capable of much more than what they have shown so far. Santi Yusta is averaging an impressive 17.8 points per game and is playing the best basketball of his career. Devin Robinson, who arrived from Cedevita Olimpija, has found his role and contributes 14.8 points and five rebounds per game, while Trae Bell-Haynes is posting 14 points and five assists this season. Bojan Dubljevic was recently injured and will be unable to help for at least two months due to a broken arm, so it remains to be seen how Zaragoza will look during that stretch and whether they can improve their results to stay involved in the playoff race.
