Here is your NBA Morning Brief covering all the latest NBA news, scores, trades, injuries, and standout performances from around the league.

TOP NBA Story of the Day: Deandre Ayton traded to Wizards as Lakers reshape roster after major offseason moves

Deandre Ayton has been traded to the Washington Wizards, while the Los Angeles Lakers will receive Jaden Hardy in return, along with two second-round draft picks in 2031 and 2032, thereby opening up a roster spot at the backup center position.

As a reminder, Ayton signed a two-year contract with the Lakers last summer as a free agent, worth $16.6 million, with a player option in the second year. A few days ago, he exercised that option, activating the second year of his deal, but he did not remain in Los Angeles for long.

The Lakers addressed the center position just days earlier in a major trade, bringing in Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, who immediately signed a four-year, $130 million extension upon arriving in Los Angeles. However, the backup center spot is now vacant, and according to Shams Charania, the main candidates for that role are Jonas Valanciunas, and Kevon Looney.

The Lakers have been very active on the market this offseason, already signing Sandro Mamukelashvili as a free agent to a four-year, $52 million deal, followed by Quentin Grimes on a four-year, $60 million contract, as well as Collin Sexton on a two-year, $19 million deal.

NBA MOVES & TRANSACTIONS: Queta extension, Rockets deal and multiple veteran moves

Neemias Queta is coming off a strong season and has now been rewarded with a new four-year, $56 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics first picked up his team option for the upcoming season, meaning the deal signed by the Portuguese big man will now run through the end of the 2030/31 campaign. Queta delivered an excellent season for Boston, appearing in 76 games while averaging 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, shooting an outstanding 65% from the field.

The Houston Rockets have made a very interesting move, trading for Dorian Finney-Smith along with three second-round picks from the Charlotte Hornets. In doing so, the Hornets continue to stockpile draft capital, as they now own 20 second-round picks over the next seven years. On the other side, the Rockets have cleared Finney-Smith’s contract, which is a significant development after already signing Bogdan Bogdanovic and Marcus Smart in free agency.

Trey Lyles is returning to the NBA after just one year in Europe, as he has agreed to a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following an excellent season with Real Madrid, where he averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists across 42 EuroLeague appearances, Lyles decided to make his return to the NBA despite having multiple offers from EuroLeague teams.

Andre Drummond, who was a free agent, has signed a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the New York Knicks. The reigning champions were in need of a solution at the center position after Mitchell Robinson left the franchise. Drummond is coming off a solid season with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he averaged 6.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists across 63 games.

NBA RUMOR MILL: Some teams viewed Jaylen Brown as a negative player before blockbuster deal

Jaylen Brown was involved in a blockbuster trade that sent him to the Philadelphia 76ers just a few days ago, but the noise surrounding him has not quieted down. More and more details are emerging, and it is now becoming increasingly clear that Brown was not held in particularly high regard across the NBA.

According to The Athletic, one anonymous general manager did not even rank Jaylen Brown among the top 50 players in the league.

“Though the idea of him being viewed as the seventh-best player on a given team was widely mocked, a recent report that one front-office member saw Brown in that way illuminated the reality that advanced analytics never shined too brightly on Brown’s game. Even more pointedly, a current general manager, speaking anonymously to comment on internal team discussions, told The Athletic in the wake of the trade that he doesn’t view Brown as a top-50 player in the NBA.”

The same source also reports that the Portland Trail Blazers’ analytics department viewed Jaylen Brown as a negative player.

“Another team with widely reported interest, the Trail Blazers, similarly did not join the chase. A Blazers team source said the Blazers were never enamored with Brown, even before Boston made it known he was available on the trade market. Two factors went into the Blazers’ disinterest: Their analytics viewed him as a negative player and the Celtics’ asking price was too high.”

An offer from the Charlotte Hornets for Brown has also surfaced, reportedly centered around Naz Reid, Miles Bridges, and draft compensation, but the Celtics ultimately turned it down.

In the end, they received Paul George in return for him, along with two first-round picks and two second-round picks, and it is clear that this was the package that ultimately satisfied the Celtics.

NBA MARKET WATCH: Cap space watch

As the 2026 NBA offseason begins to take shape, cap space is quickly becoming one of the most decisive factors in how the league’s free agency and trade market will unfold.

A clear divide is emerging between teams that are financially flexible and those operating near the second apron, where every move requires far more precision and long-term calculation. That gap is already shaping conversations across front offices, especially as teams begin prioritizing either aggressive roster upgrades or preservation of future flexibility.

Several franchises enter this phase of the offseason with significant cap room, positioning themselves as potential accelerators of the market. These teams are not necessarily chasing star-level free agents, but instead are strategically placed to absorb contracts, facilitate multi-team trades, or take advantage of opportunistic signings once the market begins to move.

On the other end of the spectrum, contending teams remain heavily restricted by apron-related limitations, which continues to push them toward smaller, targeted improvements rather than major roster overhauls. In many cases, this is forcing front offices to explore creative mechanisms such as sign-and-trade structures or veteran minimum additions to address clear roster needs.

The next phase of the offseason will likely be dictated by how quickly the cap-space teams decide to act. Historically, once the first major domino falls, it creates immediate ripple effects across the league, unlocking stalled negotiations and forcing other organizations to adjust their strategy in real time.

For now, the market remains in a holding pattern — but the financial landscape is already clearly defining who will have the power to shape it.
