It appears that Neptunas have fulfilled the high ambitions they had before the start of the season. Although they failed to reach the second stage of the EuroCup, they left a respectable impression in that competition, and by reaching the semifinals of the domestic league they can certainly consider their goals achieved. In the quarterfinals, Neptunas comfortably defeated Gargzdai 2-0 in the series. That was very important for Neptunas, who did not finish the regular season in the best form, losing five of their final six games. This is Neptunas’ first appearance in the league semifinals since 2020. Fortunately for them, the path toward the final now seems open as they will certainly be favorites against Juventus.
As already mentioned, Neptunas handled Gargzdai without major issues. The second game was somewhat more difficult, but the third quarter proved decisive, as Neptunas built a lead they maintained until the end of the game. It was extremely important for the team that they quickly recovered from a nine-point deficit during the second quarter and managed to take the lead before halftime. As throughout the entire season, Desure Buie once again showed why he is the team’s best player and how valuable his offensive talent is for Neptunas. The excellent American guard has scored in single digits only seven times this season, and even then he usually finished with eight or nine points. In the latest game, he scored 22 points, while Arnas Berucka added 13 points and seven rebounds. Neptunas’ offensive numbers have slightly declined toward the end of the season, although for much of the year they owned the best offensive rating in the league. They finished the regular season in third place, and now their offense will have an excellent opportunity to prove itself against Juventus’ weak defense.
If someone had said a month ago that Juventus would reach the semifinals of the domestic playoffs, absolutely nobody would have believed it. Exactly one month ago, Juventus suffered their 11th consecutive defeat in the regular season and at that point had seriously endangered even their playoff spot. However, they finished the season strongly, recording four wins in their final five games, with their only loss coming against Zalgiris. That secured them the seventh seed and a quarterfinal series against Rytas. It seemed like an impossible challenge, since Rytas were clearly the more talented team and heavy favorites despite some poor form and injury issues. Nevertheless, Juventus delivered two outstanding performances, earned two victories, and eliminated Rytas from the title race in Lithuania.
The magnitude of this upset is best illustrated by the fact that it had never previously happened in Lithuanian league playoff history for the seventh seed to eliminate the second seed. Juventus’ victory over Rytas even led to the dismissal of Rytas’ head coach, despite the fact that he had led the club to the FIBA Champions League title just one month earlier. Juventus won both games using the exact weapon Rytas were known for – elite offense. Across the two matchups they scored a combined 193 points. In the second game, they stayed close thanks to their excellent offense before completely taking over in the fourth quarter, where they allowed only 12 points, as the pressure and nervousness clearly affected the Rytas players late in the game. The unquestioned heroes of the victory were Hassan Diarra with 30 points and Maxwell Lewis with 24 points. One thing Juventus absolutely cannot allow against Neptunas is giving up 20 offensive rebounds, which is exactly what happened against Rytas in the previous game, although it ultimately did not cost them the win. On paper, and based on everything shown throughout the season, Juventus are likely to struggle badly in the rebounding department. However, their biggest issue will probably remain the defense, which has been a weakness all season long, and now they are once again facing a team with an excellent offense, making it difficult to believe they can beat them three times in this series.
