Nikola Jovic entered the offseason unsure about his Miami Heat future but will now embrace a new role alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The 23-year-old forward admitted he expected to be involved in trade discussions, but he is excited about the opportunity to learn from one of the NBA’s greatest players while competing alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Nikola Jovic happy to remain with Miami Heat after Giannis trade
Before Miami completed the deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jovic’s future with the franchise was uncertain. Instead of moving the Serbian forward, the Heat sent Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, Kel’el Ware and multiple draft assets to the Milwaukee Bucks to acquire Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis.
“I was happy that I stayed. I thought I was probably not going to be here. But I’m really happy. Obviously, not only because I’m going to share the court and play with [Antetokounmpo], but I’m also happy that I’m going to be able to learn from one of the greatest power forwards ever. The way he lives, the way he treats basketball, and stuff like that.”
Although trade rumors surrounded him during the offseason, Jovic said he never allowed the speculation to affect his mindset.
“I wasn’t really worried because, like they always say, you cannot control it. It’s not up to me, at the end of the day. Of course, I want to stay. As long as I’m here, I want to feel like I’m giving something back to the city, to the fans, to the team. That’s the most important thing to me. I’m happy. Hopefully, I can help this team go further this year, and really make our fans and our front office happy.”
Nikola Jovic reflects on difficult NBA season
Jovic enters his fifth NBA season looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. After averaging career highs of 10.7 points, 2.8 assists and 25.1 minutes per game during the 2024-25 season, the Serbian forward struggled last year, posting 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
The drop in production forced Nikola Jovic to reflect on what went wrong and how the experience could help him improve.
“I don’t think you ever throw something like that away. It wasn’t a great season, but I learned a lot. You learn a lot. I feel like while you’re down like that, I think that’s when you actually learn the most. At that point, you feel like you never want to be at that place again. So you do everything to not be at that place again. I feel like I learned a lot. It wasn’t great. The last season wasn’t great, but I learned a lot. Hopefully, this year, I know it’s going to be a lot better.”
Jovic also admitted that after signing his four-year, $62.4 million extension with Miami, he struggled to find the same motivation that had previously pushed him forward.
“I think there was a lot of little stuff that kind of came together and kind of didn’t help me really succeed. Also, mentally, I feel like after I signed that deal, it was the first time I felt like I wasn’t really motivated. I felt like I needed something to motivate me more. After you don’t play great, there goes your motivation. You want to be great again.”

Strong summer with Serbia helped rebuild Jovic’s confidence
Jovic used the summer international window as an opportunity to regain confidence while representing Serbia. The forward delivered impressive performances during World Cup qualifying, including a 22-point performance against Switzerland before scoring 32 points against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He believes those games helped him regain confidence heading into the new NBA season.
“It’s good. I think it builds your confidence back up a little bit. Like I always say, I know how good I am. I never didn’t believe in myself. But it’s always good to look good and play good for your country. It’s good to build my confidence back up a little bit.”

Jovic ready for new role alongside Giannis and Bam Adebayo
With Antetokounmpo joining Miami, Jovic understands that his role will change. Instead of handling the ball frequently, the Serbian forward expects to contribute through shooting, movement and playing without the ball.
The 6-foot-10 forward believes his ability to space the floor and make smart decisions will be crucial alongside Miami’s stars.
“I’m not going to have the ball a lot in my hands. It’s something that we have other guys for that. I’ve got to get my shot right. I think it’s the most important thing. From there, the small things like cuts, working around the baseline, being ready because now you have Bam and Giannis who pull a lot of attention toward them. I feel like everybody else just has to fit perfectly. I watched a lot of film. Even during the national team, you work on the simple things. Cuts, flares, offensive rebounds, and stuff like that to try and fit perfectly for the Heat.”
Jovic has already faced Antetokounmpo multiple times in both NBA and international competition, and he knows exactly what Miami is adding.
“He’s a beast. There’s not much you can say more than that.”
