After almost an entire month of PBA Governors´ Cup action, the NLEX Road Warriors are still unbeaten and sit at the top of their group with a 5-0 W-L record. The main reason for this imperious form is their head coach Jimmy Alapag, who has gotten his team to play like clockwork. His system is getting the best out of every single player as import DeQuan Jones and domestic standouts Anthony Semerad, Robert Bolick and Schonny Winston are capable of putting up a minimum of 15 points in every single game. The Road Warriors definitely hoped for a successful Governors´ Cup stint, but they certainly did not expect such flawless play. Their form culminated with the 110:96 thrashing of the San Miguel Beermen ten days ago. Many were expecting complacency to creep into their squad a couple of days ago against a dangerous Converge side, but they once again came out on top, winning comfortably by 12 points (119:107). That victory is a hallmark of a great team in the making as NLEX are now looking like a legitimate title contender capable of beating any team in the league. Today, they have an intriguing assignment against the heavily shorthanded Tropa, whose team will play with extra urgency, but the Road Warriors are superior in quality because of TNT´s heavy absences and should be able to extend their winning streak to six consecutive matches.
NLEX are no longer the most pleasant surprise of the Governors´ Cup. They are now in a position to be the favourites against the depleted lineup of TNT, so we are expecting a routine victory by them. TNT will fight with vigor after taking down the Beermen, but without potentially seven key players, they simply don´t have the muscle to beat an in-form side like NLEX at the moment.
Despite their massive absences, the TNT Tropang 5G managed to beat Converge and the Beermen in their last two outings. Tropa are the epitome of a well-coached team – they are missing almost their entire starting five, main import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson along with a couple of other bench players, but legendary head coach Chot Reyes is proving his worth once again by adjusting the system. His team is playing world class defense as they managed to keep the best offense in the league of the Beermen at only 89 points after an overtime period. The San Miguel Beermen came into the derby as heavy favourites averaging 120 ppg, but Tropa masterfully slowed the game down, carving out a 93:89 victory after a dramatic overtime. That match also marked the debut of TNT´s newly signed import, Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson, who came to help their team while his brother Rondae is recovering from an injury. He was instrumental against the Beer with a total of 20 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists as he is in much better shape and form compared to TNT´s original replacement for Rondae, Darius Days, who was a massive letdown. Besides Rahlir, Tropa and coach Reyes are relying on inspired performances of Rey Nambatac and Kim Aurin, who was feeling ill hours before the clash against the Beermen, but decided to play and was excellent with 22 points and 6 threes. Also worth noting is the comeback of Poy Erram from injury – he played a limited role, spending only 14 minutes on the court, but contributed massively with 12 points.
TNT will continue to be without numerous players. Jordan Heading is questionable as he was a gametime decision for the San Miguel Beermen, while the status of Henry Galinato is also under the question mark following his injury. Still, Tropa have enough quality and grit to fight against NLEX, but we believe they will fall short in the end because the Road Warriors are on another level compared to all the other teams Tropa have faced so far.
