Just an hour after officially parting ways with Chus Mateo, Real Madrid has unveiled the new head coach of its basketball team: Sergio Scariolo.
The Italian tactician has signed a three-year deal, tying him to the club until June 30, 2028.
Scariolo will take charge of the team following the conclusion of this summer’s EuroBasket, where he will lead Spain’s national team for the final time. The tournament, held across Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia, will mark the end of a golden era for Spain under his leadership.
This marks Scariolo’s second stint with Real Madrid, having previously coached the club between 1999 and 2002. During that spell, he led “Los Blancos” to the Spanish ACB League title in the 1999–2000 season.
Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished coaches in international basketball, Scariolo has built a legendary résumé at the helm of the Spanish national team. He has guided Spain to eight major medals:
Five golds (FIBA World Cup 2019; EuroBasket 2009, 2011, 2015, 2022)
One silver (2012 London Olympics)
Two bronzes (2016 Rio Olympics, EuroBasket 2017)
At the club level, his trophy cabinet is equally impressive…
