The Oklahoma City Thunder had an impressive regular season in 2023-’24, but their lack of size and rebounding issues were exposed in the NBA playoffs.
Addressing this deficiency has become a priority for the team, and a surprising target has emerged.
Armed with ample cap space and draft picks, the Thunder are in a strong position to pursue significant additions. One prominent name in trade discussions is Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen, who has been mentioned in various NBA rumors. The Thunder have also shown interest in Isaiah Hartenstein as a free agent.
Cleveland offers other potential trade candidates for 2024, including Karl-Anthony Towns, Nikola Vucevic, and John Collins. On the free agency front, Jonas Valanciunas and Hartenstein are also on the radar. However, a new intriguing option has surfaced.
ESPN’s Jonathan Givony recently connected the Thunder with center Donovan Clingan. Although Clingan is projected to be picked by the Portland Trail Blazers at seventh overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, Oklahoma City might trade up to secure him.
Clingan, who is 20 years old, was an AP honorable mention All-American and a two-time national champion with the UConn Huskies. Last season, he recorded an impressive 0.302 Win Shares per 48 Minutes and ranked fourth in the nation in Defensive Box Plus/Minus (6.2).
As a consensus top-10 talent, Clingan could provide the Thunder with a formidable shot-blocker and rebounder. His defensive versatility and promising offensive skills make him a valuable prospect. With numerous draft picks at their disposal, the Thunder might trade up if General Manager Sam Presti views Clingan as the optimal choice for strengthening their center position.
