Olympiacos defeated Real Madrid 92-85 in the EuroLeague final to win the club’s fourth European championship and end a long-standing statistic in the competition.
The Greek team became the first team to finish top of the regular season and lift the trophy since the EuroLeague switched to a double round-robin format in the 2016-17 season.
Olympiacos, who finished the regular season at the top with a 26-12 record, advanced to the Final Four by sweeping Monaco 3-0 in the play-off series. In the Final Four held in Athens, the side of Georgios Bartzokas first defeated Fenerbahce in the semi-finals and then beat Real Madrid in the final to lift the trophy.
Despite being one of the most consistent teams in the EuroLeague in recent years, Olympiacos had struggled in the past to win the championship.
The Greek team also reached the Final Four in the previous four seasons but failed to win the trophy. Their failures, particularly in seasons where they finished at the top of the regular season, led to the emergence of the “curse of the top seed” in the EuroLeague.
However, Georgios Bartzokas’s side not only managed to be the most successful team in the regular season, but also crowned this dominance with a championship title.
