Otago Nuggets vs Bay Hawks Preview
The Otago Nuggets have shown the biggest improvement this season compared to last year when they were the main punching bag and other teams were only improving their point differential against them. The main reason for their surge is the fact they made a massive roster overhaul. They brought in three new quality imports along with one of the best shooters in New Zealand, Ethan Rusbatch, and also the dominant center Isaac Miller-Jose. Otago had an excellent start to their campaign but then faltered midseason because other teams reinforced and they had to switch imports because Mikey Henn got injured and was replaced with Craig Moller. Luckily for the Nuggets, they managed to shake off their poor form and win their last three out of five games, including a huge victory on the road last Sunday, when they shocked the main title favourites Auckland 84:80. While it is true that match meant nothing to Auckland and they were also without Robert Loe and Chris Johnson, what Otago achieved is truly impressive and a proof they will be a threat in the playoffs. The Nuggets have basically already secured the playoffs as they mathematically need one more win to seal a playoff berth officially. They have a wonderful chance this Thursday against the weakest team in the league and we have no doubts they will beat the Hawks.
The hosts are entering today´s contest on the back of one of the biggest upsets of the season. The confidence in their locker room must be sky high at the moment and we think that the Hawks will not be able to keep up with them.
The Bay Hawks are by far the biggest disappointment of this season as they are currently sitting at the bottom of the standings with a miserable 3-14 W-L record. Before this year started, the Hawks put together a star-studded roster on paper and looked like a sure lock for the playoffs. However, injuries, absences, lack of chemistry and not respecting the basic basketball principles have cost them as they are already mathematically out of the playoff picture. During the offseason, they kept their main pillar, Australian import Daniel Grida, and signed one of the best scorers in the country, Keanu Rasmussen. Along with bringing in two new very solid American imports Jeremy McLaughlin and Chase Jeter, they also secured the services of Alonzo Burton, who returned to the Nest and his home. In addition, the Bay Hawks also had the young phenom Jackson Ball available for eight games, but even that didn´t help them as they look completely lost defensively and just run and shoot in offense with the simplest plays without any basketball complexity.
The guests are riding a five-game losing streak, while they have also lost their last nine out of ten matches. Besides horrific form, they are experiencing other problems as they have their two best players, Dan Grida and Keanu Rasmussen, questionable for today´s clash. They were without both of them in their last match against the Manawatu Jets, who routinely beat them 97:88.
