Panathinaikos vs Fenerbahce Preview
It seemed that Panathinaikos was on its way out of the crisis after last week’s dramatic home win over Real Madrid, but just a few days later came a major shock. They traveled to Belgrade where Partizan demolished them by 78-62. It was Panathinaikos’ worst performance of the entire season, and it came at a moment when the tension was already at its peak. Club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos put both head coach Ergin Ataman and the players under fire, so you never know what the unpredictable Giannakopoulos might do if Panathinaikos continues to deliver pale performances. From the very start of the season, the Greens have not looked convincing, but once Kendrick Nunn went down with an injury, all the problems surfaced. They were left without any real offensive creation and without the only player capable of consistently generating an advantage in isolation. They now stand at 16-11 in the EuroLeague, which is good enough for just eighth place. Far below what this club considers acceptable.
When you score 62 points in any EuroLeague game, it is obvious that the offense was not functioning. T.J. Shorts scored 21 points in Belgrade, but he finished with zero assists, and whenever he was on the floor there was no offensive fluidity whatsoever. It can now be stated with certainty that acquiring the former Paris superstar was a bad move, as Shorts has not improved Panathinaikos even by a millimeter. Kostas Sloukas carried the team on his back to wins against Asvel and Real Madrid, but Sloukas is 36 years old, and it is neither fair nor realistic to expect him to lead on his own a team with EuroLeague title ambitions. Jerian Grant lacks the consistency that defined him in previous seasons, and coach Ataman has recently been getting very little from both Cedi Osman and Juancho Hernangomez. However, their poor form is largely a product of Nunn’s absence, because without his dominance in isolation, there is no space created for players who heavily rely on three-point shooting such as Osman and Hernangomez.
Fenerbahce has won 11 straight games in all competitions and 16 of its last 17 overall. In the EuroLeague, they are riding a six-game winning streak, with their last loss coming on the road against Dubai a month ago. The reigning champions sit atop the standings at 19-7, but the question is how badly they want to stay there. The current EuroLeague format has been in place for a decade, and not once has the regular-season first-place team gone on to win the title. That fact alone sounds unreal, so it remains to be seen whether Sarunas Jasikevicius is superstitious and wary of negative trends. His team owns a historically elite defense and ranks first in all major defensive categories. They have the best defensive rating (109.6), allow the fewest points per game (79.1), and hold opponents to the lowest field-goal percentage (48.7%). When you have numbers like that on the defensive end, you can afford the offensive issues that have been evident all season, even if they do not directly impact Jasikevicius’ team results.
In last week’s double round, Fenerbahce played two road games and defeated both Barcelona and Paris. In the French capital, they trailed for almost the entire game but eventually won 92-90 after a comeback. Tarik Biberovic led the way with 19 points and finally managed to step into a more prominent role, which has not often been the case this season. The show is usually led by Talen Horton-Tucker and Wade Baldwin, who have established themselves as the leaders of this team. Horton-Tucker typically starts games, while Baldwin brings energy and pace off the bench. Nando De Colo has also recently joined the club and has fit in perfectly, with coach Jasikevicius praising him highly. The French veteran has added extra quality to the backcourt and composure in key moments. Bonzie Colson has returned after a short absence, while Devon Hall has now landed on the injury list. One of Fenerbahce’s main offensive problems is the lack of consistent production from the frontcourt. Nicolo Melli is the player they rely on the most, but aside from him, no one truly stands out.
Panathinaikos vs Fenerbahce H2H
Panathinaikos defeated Fenerbahce by 81-77 on the road in the first part of the season and has won five of the last six head-to-head meetings.
Injuries and Suspensions
Mathias Lessort is the only injured player for Panathinaikos, while Kostas Sloukas is questionable although he is expected to play. Kendrick Nunn has returned to the team. Fenerbahce cannot count on Devon Hall, Chris Silva, Jilson Bango, and Arturs Zagars, while Armando Bacot, Scottie Wilbekin, and Melih Mahmutoglu are questionable.
Where to Watch Panathinaikos vs Fenerbahce?
Panathinaikos vs Fenerbahce Best Betting Tip and Prediction
If we analyze everything we have seen over the past few weeks, it is clear that Fenerbahce holds the edge over Panathinaikos. However, with Kendrick Nunn returning, things change drastically because with him on the floor the hosts look several levels better. Defensively, they showed great intensity against Real Madrid, and it is realistic to expect a similar effort now against a team that struggles offensively. At the end of the day, Fenerbahce has to lose somewhere, and historically and traditionally Panathinaikos has looked good against them.
