Patty Mills brings NBA experience to Asvel
Patty Mills was selected in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play for the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat and Utah Jazz.
His most successful spell came in San Antonio, where he became an important part of Gregg Popovich’s rotation and helped the Spurs win the NBA championship in 2014.
Mills has also established himself as one of the most experienced players in Australian basketball, representing the Boomers at the highest level for many years. His arrival gives Asvel a veteran backcourt presence and a proven perimeter scorer.
The move also reunites Mills with Tony Parker. The two shared the court for several seasons with the Spurs and were teammates on San Antonio’s 2014 championship-winning team.
Asvel continue rebuilding after financial setback
Mills’ arrival comes after Asvel were forced to significantly change their plans for the 2026-27 season.
The club initially projected a €59 million budget and entered the offseason with ambitions of building a much stronger roster. However, a planned Malaysian investment failed to materialize after the potential partner was deemed not to meet the necessary requirements, causing the projected budget to fall to around €24 million.
The financial setback led to significant changes to Asvel’s roster. Sylvain Francisco left for Panathinaikos, while Armoni Brooks joined Valencia on loan. Daniel Theis ultimately moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv after his move to Asvel did not go through, while Nick Weiler-Babb joined Crvena Zvezda.
Asvel are also involved in ongoing takeover talks with the Buss family, with Joey and Jesse Buss emerging as potential new owners of the French EuroLeague club. The developments have made Asvel one of the more closely watched teams in this summer’s EuroLeague transactions.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the project, Joel Bolomboy and now Patty Mills have decided to remain with Asvel, giving the club two experienced players around which to build its 2026-27 roster.
