Rain or Shine Elasto Painters vs Meralco Bolts Preview
Following a deep push in the Commissioner´s Cup and an exit in the playoff semifinal against Barangay Ginebra, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters are heavily undermanned at the start of this Governors´ Cup and poised to finish outside the playoff zone. Even though they are led by one of the best coaches in the country, Yeng Guiao, the Elasto Painters simply do not have enough quality and depth in their rotation to seriously compete. They are without Keith Datu and Jun Roque, who will miss this entire conference, while Stanley Pringle, Leonard Santillan and Felix Lemetti didn´t suit up for the opening clash against Blackwater and are questionable for today. With all these absences, Rain or Shine couldn´t keep up with the Bossing and lost miserably by 23 points (131:108). Their lone bright spot in that clash was their import Aaron Fuller, who scored 38 points and grabbed 15 boards, but the rest of the team didn´t provide enough support. To make matters even worse for Rain or Shine, a couple of days ago they traded away one of their main scorers Gian Mamuyac to the Phoenix Fuelmasters in exchange for a future draft pick. Yeng Guiao is a top head coach, but even he can´t think of a gameplan good enough to handle teams like Meralco with all these absences and injuries as the Elasto Painters should lose this match routinely.
If Rain or Shine were complete, then this would be a 50-50 game, but with their absences, the Bolts have to be clear and heavy favourites. It is very rare that a PBA team is as depleted as the Elasto Painters are at the moment, so anything but a double-digit victory for Meralco would be a surprise in our eyes.
After excellent performances in the last Philippine Cup and Commissioner´s Cup, the Meralco Bolts have high hopes for this conference. However, they lost their opening match by a single point against the Phoenix Fuelmasters. They were expected to win that game routinely, but their import Jordon Varnado was ruled out because of an injury at the last second. The Fuelmasters took advantage of the situation, but struggled against the shorthanded Bolts, which means that Meralco have a very solid domestic foundation. The Bolts are not resting on their laurels and tapped a well-known import face in the Philippines, Antonio Hester, as a temporary replacement for the injured Jordon Varnado. According to most recent reports, Hester should arrive to the Philippines on Thursday and should be available straight away. Following their opening loss against Phoenix, team captain of the Bolts, Chris Newsome, was seen arguing with the officials and the PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial in the dugout after some very strange and questionable referee calls in the final minutes. Meralco are convinced that game was stolen from them, so they will be full of motives today and with an import in their lineup, which should be enough for the win.
As we already concluded, the Elasto Painters currently lack the firepower to cope with a strong team like Meralco. The Bolts almost won their match against the Fuelmasters without an import, so with Antonio Hester, they are far superior compared to the decimated roster of Rain or Shine.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters vs Meralco Bolts H2H
In the previous Commissioner´s Cup, the Elasto Painters got the better off of the Bolts by seven points (109:102). In the last Philippine Cup, these two teams squared off in the playoff quarter-final with Meralco winning the series 2:1.
Injuries and Suspensions
The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters will certainly be without Keith Datu and Jun Roque, while Stanley Pringle, Felix Lemetti and Leonard Santillan are all questionable. The Meralco Bolts can´t count on their import Jordon Varnado, who is dealing with a slight injury.
