Rich Paul dismissed suggestions that LeBron James is chasing another NBA championship, insisting the four-time MVP will make his next career decision entirely on his own terms.
LeBron James’ longtime agent explained that the opportunity to choose his next destination comes after years of building a legendary career and reaching a point where outside expectations no longer define his decisions.
Paul’s comments came after Charles Barkley recently questioned whether LeBron was still chasing the legacy of Michael Jordan, referencing James’ famous 2016 “ghost” comment about the Bulls legend.
Speaking via ESPN’s SportsCenter, Paul explained that James’ presence would immediately change the outlook of any team in the NBA.
“I think when you have a player like him, he unlocks something on one of all 30 teams. The team he chooses, I don’t know yet. There’s a seriousness that comes with this. There’s a competitiveness that comes. We know how hard it is to win championships. No roster, no organization is guaranteed to win a championship.”
Paul also rejected the idea that LeBron James is still searching for another championship after already winning four NBA titles.
“He’s not chasing the ring. You hear these things like, ‘Why do we have to chase? He got four.’ There’s nothing to chase. … But when you’ve worked this hard to position yourself the way you have, and you can actually decide what you wanna do, who wouldn’t take advantage of that?”
The agent added that outside opinions will not influence James’ decision-making process.
“So we’re not worried about nobody’s opinions or anything like that. He’s gonna make the best decision for himself. We’ll see what happens.”
LeBron James’ decision will be made on his own terms
Speaking to Forbes earlier this week, Rich Paul explained that LeBron James is approaching this decision differently compared to previous moments in his career.
“This is the first time he’s making a decision that is truly for him. There is no pressure. When he left Cleveland [in 2010 for Miami Heat], he had to win a ring. When he came back [in 2014], he had to deliver on the promise. This is at this stage where he can decide what he wants to do and how he wants to do it.”
Paul also made it clear that fans should not expect an immediate announcement regarding James’ future.
“I don’t think this happens anytime soon. I don’t think it’ll be the next few days. I’m on his schedule. I can’t tell the man how fast to move. When he’s telling me what he’s deciding, that’s when I’ll let you guys know.”
