Sacramento Kings vs Denver Nuggets Preview
After being playoff contenders for a couple of seasons, the Kings have completely fallen apart and suffered a major fiasco this season, and already now, in mid-December, they are seriously behind the teams competing for the playoffs. They can only hope that with a few good runs they will manage to get back into the play-in race, but even that, from this perspective, looks quite difficult and almost impossible — not so much because of the gap in the number of wins, but because of how this team looks and what their body language shows. In the last six games, the team has recorded five losses and only one win, and that came against the Miami Heat. In their most recent matchup, they lost to the Indiana Pacers, and that was already their 18th loss of the season, with only six wins.
It is in no way an excuse for this team that they have played most of the season without their best player, Domantas Sabonis, who is injured. This team is simply poorly constructed, they have several interesting and quality players, but their compatibility is extremely low, and essentially the strengths of their biggest-name players are the same. DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine were teammates with the Chicago Bulls as well, and that team also failed to accomplish anything significant — and they were better players then than they are now. These two are also the team’s leading scorers, and when they are your best scorers, it is clear that you have major problems. The Kings are the only team besides the Wizards that ranks in the bottom five in the league in offensive and defensive rating, as well as rebounding. With those numbers in mind, it is no surprise that they are in the position they are currently in.
The Denver Nuggets are playing a solid season so far, there have been some unexpected losses, especially on their home court, where they are in a rather negative stretch, but despite that, the team remains at the top of the Western Conference. And the competition there seems to be quite strong, besides the Oklahoma City Thunder, there are also the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, and lurking from the background, the San Antonio Spurs. They have played 23 games so far, recording 17 wins and six losses. The Nuggets have just returned from a short road trip in which they played three games against Eastern Conference teams and won all three, which is good news even though the opponents were fairly weak. The Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, and Charlotte Hornets are not opponents who can seriously threaten the Nuggets.
What is quite surprising is the fact that in the ten home games they have played, the Nuggets have suffered four losses. For years, home court has been a truly powerful weapon for the Nuggets, but so far this season, it is far from that. Of course, their strongest weapon is the three-time MVP, Nikola Jokic, who is playing yet another phenomenal season and delivers spectacular performances night after night. In their most recent game, with nine assists, he managed to surpass Michael Jordan in career assists. Naturally, when you have him on your team along with a very well-playing Jamal Murray, it is no surprise that the Nuggets have the best offense in the league based on offensive rating. On the other hand, their defense was very good while Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun were healthy. With their injuries, the defense has significantly declined, and until they return, the main challenge will be figuring out how to make the defense at least a bit more effective so it doesn’t become too big of a problem.
