One of Barcelona’s top young talents, Sayon Keita, will continue his career at the University of North Carolina under former NBA coach Michael Malone, according to Jonathan Givony.
The 18-year-old from Mali represents a major addition for North Carolina, where he will continue his development after progressing through Barcelona’s youth system and spending the past two seasons with the senior team in a limited role.
Keita arrives in Chapel Hill after developing in Barcelona’s renowned youth system, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most intriguing frontcourt prospects. With impressive physical tools, including a near 7-foot frame and extraordinary wingspan, he is viewed as a player with significant long-term upside.
During the past season, Keita gained valuable professional experience by appearing for Barcelona’s senior team in both Liga Endesa and EuroLeague competition. His defensive presence, rebounding ability, and efficiency around the basket made him one of the standout young names in the club’s pipeline.
His departure is another notable blow for Barcelona’s developmental structure, which has increasingly seen elite young prospects choose the NCAA route as an alternative path toward the NBA. Keita now joins a growing list of former Barca players who have elected to pursue collegiate basketball in the United States before taking the next step in their professional careers.
For North Carolina, landing a player of Keita’s caliber signals serious ambition, while for European basketball, it further highlights the shifting landscape in global talent development.
