Former North Carolina guard Seth Trimble has committed to Louisville, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The Cardinals have added another major piece to a roster projected among the best in college basketball.
Trimble entered the transfer portal in April after completing four seasons with the Tar Heels. He can now return to college basketball because of a recent eligibility ruling involving players from the 2022 freshman class.
Judge Charlotte Sweeney of Colorado ruled that every player from the 2022 freshman class receives an additional year of eligibility. Trimble joined North Carolina in 2022 and played for the Tar Heels throughout his four-year college career.
The 6-foot-3 guard considered returning to Chapel Hill throughout the summer. However, North Carolina’s full roster and other circumstances ultimately prevented him from returning to the program.
Trimble announced his departure in an emotional farewell message to North Carolina late Tuesday evening. He reflected on his four years with the Tar Heels and made clear how much the university means to him.
“Carolina, I’ve had the best four years that anybody could ask for,” Trimble wrote on Instagram. “Through thick and thin, I gave my absolute all and represented this university and that jersey every single day.”
Trimble also explained that North Carolina remained in consideration throughout the summer. However, he ultimately decided that transferring was the best option for his future.
“Know that the love I have for this place is irreplaceable,” Trimble wrote. “I will forever come back home and honor this place like I’ve done and like the ones before me do.”

During his North Carolina career, Trimble scored 971 points in 126 games. He became an important contributor for the Tar Heels and established himself as one of their most reliable two-way players.
Trimble enjoyed his best statistical season in 2025-26, averaging 14 points, 3.8 rebounds, and three assists per game. He also earned North Carolina’s Defensive Player of the Year award for his performances throughout the season.
The guard was also named an All-ACC Honorable Mention following his impressive campaign. His defensive ability and experience should now provide Louisville with another valuable option in the backcourt.
Trimble entered the summer hoping to continue his career at the professional level. However, he was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft before joining the Washington Wizards for NBA Summer League action.
He gained valuable experience during the summer while competing against several of the league’s top young prospects. Trimble will now return to college basketball with another opportunity to make an impact.
His arrival gives Louisville another experienced player with significant ACC experience. The Cardinals will hope Trimble can immediately contribute on both ends of the floor as they pursue major goals in the 2026-27 season.
