Southland Sharks vs Nelson Giants Preview
Despite a very poor start to their campaign due to being heavily shorthanded, the Southland Sharks managed to wrestle off their early hiccups and surge in May and June with a 10-game winning streak. That streak is a product of finally having a full roster – key pieces like Keylan Boone, Brayden Inger, Tobias Cameron and Max Darling all joined after the initial couple of weeks and have made the Sharks one of the main juggernauts in the country and the main team to beat. In the last three weeks however, the stellar form of Southland has slowly evaporated even though they are still mostly winning games. They suffered a massive shocker at home, losing by nine points to the Taranaki Airs and had huge issues against the Whai on the road, winning by six after overtime. In their final match, they were facing a heavily undermanned Canterbury but struggled and only won by five points. For today´s clash, the hosts will be without two key rotation pieces, Tukaha Cooper and Max Darling, but that shouldn´t be a big problem since all of their main stars and starters are healthy and ready to play.
There is no doubt that the Sharks should routinely win this Saturday, but we are expecting a close affair against a very dangerous Giants side. Nelson have figured things out and are fighting against top contenders, losing those games with a single-digit margin. The Giants also need a victory for the playoffs, so they will certainly sell their skin dearly at the ILT Stadium Southland.
During May and early June, we thought that the Nelson Giants were done and out of the playoff picture, but recently, they have rediscovered their form. The midseason signing of the explosive American guard Shane Gatling has seriously lifted their entire squad (he scored an incredible 56 points last week in the win over the Franklin Bulls), while the most recent addition of foreign center Daniel Saylor has given the Giants some much needed stability and rim protection. Along with domestic superstars Kruz Perrot-Hunt and Tohi Smith-Milner, the guests are looking very strong at the moment and we think they should be able to make the postseason at the last second. They are only one victory away from the playoff zone and have four games remaining on their schedule. Today´s clash in Invercargill is their most difficult matchup, but the remaining matches against Manawatu, Tauranga and Taranaki look more than winnable. All in all, the Giants look very stable and poised – they took down the Bulls last week without Smith-Milner and Perrott-Hunt, while against the main title favourites Auckland two weeks ago, they only lost by six points at home.
Only a six-point loss against the Tuatara and a two-point overtime loss in Wellington, mean that Nelson have excellent chemistry and a very solid defensive foundation. They have to go all out today against the vice-champions, so we are expecting an interesting matchup they will most probably lose but not by more than ten points.
