The time has finally come for the New Zealand NBL playoff final clash. It will be a replay of last year´s final when the Saints won the title at home in Wellington. This time, Southland have the home court advantage, which could be crucial in this kind of a game, but the Saints played incredible basketball against Auckland in the semifinal, so it will be interesting to see how the Sharks counter them. The vice-champions from Invercargill progressed to the final after two excellent victories – they eliminated the Tauranga Whai at home routinely (96:81) and then stunned the Canterbury Rams at the Parakiore 84:74 to secure their second final appearance in the last two seasons. Southland´s head coach Jonathan Yim has announced this will be his last game managing Southland. After failing to win the title last year, he desperately wants the chip this season, so his players will certainly play with extra urgency. We talked a lot about the defending champions this season, stating they would improve massively come playoff time and that is exactly what has happened. The Saints had an unconvincing regular season, but stepped up in the playoffs, taking down the Otago Nuggets routinely 94:81 and then pulled off one of the most improbable wins of the season as they absolutely ravaged the main title favourites, the Auckland Tuatara, on the road in the semifinal, winning by a massive margin (112:69). If a team manages to beat the mighty Tuatara by more than 40 points in a playoff elimination clash, that means that team is clicking on all cylinders. Wellington finally played strong defense in that match, shutting down Auckland in every facet of the game and scoring 110+ points in the process. This makes them a very dangerous prospect to play against today, but the Sharks have certainly scouted their semifinal performance and will be ready. The Wellington Saints will be relying on the best player in the league and the reigning MVP, Elijah Pepper, along with Carlin Davison, Akech Aliir and Donte Ingram. They will be without the services of Braydon Iuli, while Izayah Le´Afa and Hyrum Harris are questionable.
Le´Afa is questionable, but he hasn´t been playing for some time now. On the other hand, the potential absence of Hyrum Harris would be huge and could title the game in favour of the Sharks. Still, even without Harris, the Saints have more than enough to win the title today and we think he will play through his injury because this is the playoff final.
