Real Madrid and Valencia got victories against Milano and Paris respectively while Partizan defeated Bayern to end their EuroLeague losing streak.
Real Madrid had two massive wins in a row before this contest, first against Barcelona in the EuroLeague during “El Clasico”, and then they dispatched Valencia in Liga Endesa. Milano had a partially successful double week in the EuroLeague but lost the previous game to Crvena Zvezda after blowing a double digit lead late. The problems compounded for Peppe Poeta as Stefano Tonut, Nate Sestina, Ousmane Diop, Leonardo Tote and Leandro Bolmaro were all out, while Real Madrid were with a full strength side.
Trey Lyles had 11 points in the first half and Real Madrid went 6-8 for three with a rock solid defensive display. The tandem of Facundo Campazzo and Theo Maledon was dominant in both scoring and assisting and Sergio Scariolo’s side took a 54-36 lead at the half. Milano got thoroughly outrebounded from the start, losing in that department 35-20 and shot very poorly from the perimeter, simply being unable to come back to the game. The Spanish side’s big men kept control of the pain on both sides and cruised to a blowout win to improve their record to 15-8, while Milano fell out of the play-in spots with their record being 11-12.
Six Real Madrid players were in double figures with Trey Lyles being the best one with 17 points. For Milano, only Marko Guduric had any kind of rhythm as he scored 15. Real Madrid’s second game in the double week will be at home against Monaco, while Milano will host Zalgiris at home.
Valencia was led by Kameron Taylor‘s 28 points and six rebounds as they defended their home floor against Paris, taking a 50-32 lead at intermission and never looking back or being in any trouble. Neal Sako was also great for Valencia with 12 points and nine rebounds, while only Justin Robinson did damage for Paris with 14 points and nine assists.
Paris was only lacking Derek Willis, so it seemed as if they would be able to match Valencia’s fast pace, but their 19 turnovers and 11-34 shooting from three-point range really decimated them during the contest, while Pedro Martinez‘ side shot 65% from the paint to cruise to their fifteenth win of the EuroLeague campaign, winning 98-84. Paris’ record fell to 7-15 after this game, and they will host Dubai, while Valencia will travel to Germany to face Bayern.
And speaking of Bayern, they lost their second matchup of the season to Partizan, who was able to finally break their seven-game losing streak, winning 67-63 in a tough and gritty defensive contest to make it a clean sweep by the ABA League champions against the Bundesliga representative. Both teams came in with limited rotations: Bayern announced before the game they would be without Andreas Obst for this contest, while also being without Elias Harris, Rokas Jokubaitis, Stefan Jovic and Kamar Baldwin, while Partizan was without Carlik Jones, Shake Milton, Mario Nakic, Vanja Marinkovic and Jabari Parker.
Partizan had a very even distribution of scoring in the first half and hit 8-14 threes in first half, but gave up an 11-point lead very easily at the end of the period to be up only 34-32 entering the second half. The game stayed close until the fourth quarter, where Nick Calathes did phenomenal work on the defensive end while Cameron Payne hit big shots from the perimeter to give Joan Pennaroya his first win as Partizan head coach in the EuroLeague. Partizan’s record improved to 7-16 while Bayern’s fell to 8-15. Payne led all scorers with 16 points while Wenyen Gabriel had 13 for Bayern. Svetislav Pesic‘s side will host Valencia, as mentioned previously, while Partizan will stay in Germany to host first-placed Hapoel Tel Aviv in front of their travelling home contingent.
