Spartak vs Mega Preview
Spartak’s almost fairy-tale start to the season has been replaced by a crisis of results and uncertainty regarding the club’s internal functioning. Vladimir Jovanovic’s team has lost four of its last five games, while club president Slobodan Jaramazovic has resigned from his position. In the previous ABA League round, Spartak suffered a home defeat to Cedevita Olimpija, 87–84, marking the team’s third consecutive setback in regional competition. Before that, they lost on the road to Ilirija (78–75) and Bosna (72–57). Their only recent win came in the FIBA Champions League, where they convincingly beat Benfica 99–69.
The victory over the Portuguese side secured Spartak a place in the next round of European competition, a major achievement for a club that continues to grow year after year. With that momentum and in good spirits, they awaited the surging Cedevita Olimpija, hoping to break their two-game losing streak. However, even 34 points from the fantastic Olivier Hanlan, an advantage on the glass, and statistical parity in several categories were not enough for Spartak to defeat the team from Ljubljana. After the game – a match in which the home coach successfully used all five challenges he requested – the Subotica club was furious with the officiating. According to Basketball Sphere, president Slobodan Jaramazovic submitted his resignation, citing his inability to secure fair and honest officiating for Spartak in the ABA League. Should this situation escalate, it is clear that Spartak – and Serbian basketball as a whole – could be seriously shaken and pushed backward. For that reason, we should expect some sort of reaction from Spartak in this upcoming game. Still, they will be shorthanded without Danilo Nikolic, while the excellent Igor Drobnjak missed national-team duties due to injury. On the other hand, Spartak will regain Stefan Momirov after the national-team break – he is overflowing with confidence after hitting two clutch threes in the fourth quarter and becoming one of Serbia’s heroes in Sarajevo. To break their losing streak, Spartak will need to reduce their turnover count, an issue that has plagued them recently, and find a way to get their talented center Shevon Thompson more involved.
After seven ABA League rounds, Mega holds a record of just two wins and five losses. What especially concerns coach Vule Avdalovic is that his team has lost its previous two games by large margins. Zadar beat them at home 88–73, and after that Mega suffered a heavy defeat on their own floor, where Buducnost rolled past them 98–65. Mega’s last win in the ABA League came more than a month ago when they defeated Ilirija 109–83.
As a result, Mega decided to make a move the club often makes when facing difficult situations – signing a player who can bring immediate offensive firepower. Their choice was the undersized point guard from Sloga Kraljevo, 23-year-old Kyrell Luc, who averaged 22.7 points and seven assists across nine games in the Serbian KLS, along with an impressive 54.9 percent field-goal percentage. It will be interesting to see how he handles the jump to a higher level of competition, but he will certainly bring something new to a Mega offense that scored just 73 and 65 points in its last two outings. Before that slump, Mega actually played its best game of the season, dropping 109 points on Ilirija, a game in which Bogoljub Markovic exploded for 30 points. Bogoljub Markovic remains their most reliable weapon, which he confirmed in the following games with 15 and 18 points – making him one of the few consistently productive players on the Belgrade roster. Bogoljub Markovic and Savo Drezgic were both part of Serbia’s national team during the recent FIBA window, so it is possible they will carry some renewed confidence into this matchup. Several other Mega players also represented their national teams, including Luigi Suigo and Urban Kroflic, which limited coach Vule Avdalovic’s ability to increase training intensity during the league break.
Spartak vs Mega H2H
Last season, the head-to-head score was 1–1. Spartak won in Subotica 110–86, while Mega got their revenge in Belgrade with a 97–90 victory.
Injuries and Suspensions
Spartak will be without Danilo Nikolic for the foreseeable future, while Luka Cerovina and Igor Drobnjak are questionable. Mega is expected to be at full strength.
Where to Watch Spartak vs Mega?
Spartak vs Mega Best Betting Tip and Prediction
Spartak has dealt with roster issues recently, but the team still possesses more than enough quality for this level of competition. A strong response is expected after three straight ABA League losses. The players will also have extra motivation following the narrow defeat to Cedevita Olimpija – a game in which they believe the officiating severely hurt them, ultimately prompting the club president’s resignation. This should drive Spartak to come out aggressively and channel their frustration against a young Mega squad that is also in a difficult stretch. Mega delivered two disastrous performances in their last outings, and during the national-team break coach Vule Avdalovic barely had a full roster available for practice. For all these reasons, Spartak is expected to win this matchup by a wider margin.
