Sutherland Sharks vs North Bears Preview
Sunday is the day for the NBL1 – East Grand Final between two star-studded teams as Sutherland and North Bears are going head-to-head at the Guzman y Gomez Stadium for the coveted trophy and a place in the NBL1 National Finals. Both of these teams more than deservedly find themselves in the final – the Sutherland Sharks had a terrific regular season, which they finished with a very strong 14-6 W-L record. They were experiencing some difficulties at the start because they were shorthanded, but once their main stars and top tier prospects, Jason Spurgin and Tyler Robertson, started playing, the Sharks turned into a well-oiled machine. During the regular season, Sutherland played the North Bears twice and split those matches. They met once again in round 1 of the playoffs as the Bears pulled off a routine 93:79 victory, but the Sharks were not eliminated since they finished in third place in the standings. They got a second chance and fully took advantage of it as they eliminated the Maitland Mustangs in emphatic fashion with a 100:76 win. In the semifinal, they were facing an elite and experienced Illawarra Hawks side on the road but managed to stifle them and come away victorious after overtime (85:79). That win over Illawarra and their home win in the regular season against today´s opponents mean they definitely have enough quality and depth to win the title today, but they will be facing one of the best teams in the entire NBL1 system.
It will be difficult this Sunday for the Sharks to win the title, but not impossible. They have already narrowly beaten the Bears and with their two superstars Spurgin and Robertson along with a very solid and well-drilled domestic core, they will be hoping to stun the North Bears.
Besides Rockingham and Geraldton from the NBL1 – West, we consider the North Bears to be one of the best teams in the NBL1 system this season. They have an incredible roster, which is led by two top tier prospects, Fabijan Krslovic and Wani Swaka Lo Buluk. The domestic contingent of Ignatius Mitchell, Matthew Wacher and Lachlan Bofinger has been together for years and has amazing chemistry. Also, the Bears have Hunter Goodrick providing a spark off the bench, so overall, they look better on paper compared to Sutherland. The Bears were dominating during the regular season, finishing in second place in the standings with the same record as the regular season champions Illawarra. On their way to this Grand Final, they first took care of business of today´s opponents with a 14-point victory and then also routinely beat the Central Coast Crusaders 94:80. In our opinion, only Illawarra and Sutherland from the NBL1 – East division have enough manpower to tackle the Bears, but overall, the North Bears are the undisputed kings of the division and huge title favourites today. The main reasons for that are three top-tier NBL players that the Bears possess along with probably the best chemistry and system. This should be too much for the Sharks, who should be able to hang on for most of the game, but the Bears should eventually break away in the final frame and win the trophy.
The North Bears have an amazing juggernaut squad with unparalleled quality. They have beaten Sutherland in two out of three matches they played this year and are entering this playoff final as clear favourites.
Sutherland Sharks vs North Bears H2H
These two teams met three times already this season with the North Bears winning twice and the Sharks winning once. During the regular season, they split their head-to-head matches – at the start of the season in mid-April, North Bears won routinely at home by ten points (83:73), but the Sharks exacted revenge in mid-July at home with a narrow one-point victory (63:62). In the opening round of the playoffs around three weeks ago, the Bears won easily at home by 14 points (93:79).
