Sylvain Francisco has opened up about his decision to join Asvel, his breakout season with Zalgiris, NBA rumors and the ambitious project being built in Lyon in an extensive interview with BeBasket.
Asvel have significantly increased their investment ahead of the new season and assembled one of the most interesting rosters in European basketball, bringing in several notable names including Armoni Brooks, Daniel Theis, Nick Weiler-Babb, Both Gach and Yves Pons. However, there is no doubt that the biggest signing of the summer is Francisco, who arrives after the best season of his career with Zalgiris.
The French guard played 42 EuroLeague games last season, averaging 16.5 points, 6.5 assists and 2.9 rebounds, earning a place on the All-EuroLeague First Team.
Francisco believes he can still improve despite breakout season
Despite becoming one of the most recognized guards in European basketball, Francisco insists that he has not reached his peak yet. The 28-year-old admitted that the previous season was the best of his career but believes there is still room for improvement.
“I don’t know if I am at my prime. However, I know that I just had the best season of my career.”
Francisco highlighted the importance of continuity and team chemistry during his time with Zalgiris, where the Lithuanian club finished fifth in the EuroLeague regular season before facing Fenerbahce in the playoffs.
“I am improving year after year, and we proved at Zalgiris that the continuity given to the team can take us very far. Finishing fifth in the EuroLeague was incredible.”
Although Zalgiris were eliminated by Fenerbahce in the playoffs, Francisco described the season as a valuable experience.
“I wouldn’t say I am at my prime. I still have a lot to learn.”
Many transfer rumors were inaccurate
During the offseason, Francisco was linked with several European giants, but the French guard admitted that many reports surrounding his future were incorrect.
“Unfortunately, I can’t do anything about it. Sometimes I wonder how they come up with these things.”
Francisco explained that while some rumors eventually become accurate, many create unnecessary confusion for players, clubs and fans.
“Before, it was always wrong. Now, it is often right around 70% of the time. It is frustrating and dangerous. Even for fans, the surprise is less beautiful when they learn about a signing through rumors instead of a proper club announcement.”
Why Francisco chose Asvel over other EuroLeague options
According to Francisco, several EuroLeague teams showed interest in signing him, but Asvel’s project convinced him more than other offers.
“Five teams offered the same amount and wanted to wait until July 20, the date when my NBA exit clause expires.”
However, Francisco explained that the opportunity to lead a French project was a major factor in his decision.
“For me, the project in France was more interesting than the others. Taking a French team, aiming for the EuroLeague Final Four, why not even winning the EuroLeague? That would be a dream.”
Another important reason was being closer to his family.
“I really saw myself there and imagined this project. It also feels good to be closer to my family.”
Working with Tony Parker was a major attraction
Francisco also spoke about working with Tony Parker, who will take over as Asvel head coach next season.
The French guard admitted that Parker’s vision immediately convinced him.
“His vision was incredible, and I believed in it. Especially being his choice, considering he was also a point guard.”
Francisco also praised the rest of Asvel’s coaching staff, which includes experienced names such as Vincent Collet and Dounia Issa.
“Of course, there is Tony Parker, but we also have other very high-level coaches around him. That is what will bring us experience.”
Asvel dream team needs time and patience
With the arrival of several big names, many have already described Asvel as a potential “dream team” in European basketball. However, Francisco warned that success will not happen overnight.
“We know it is never easy to have a first year at the highest level. Tony will immediately be under pressure, but the first year will be a year of adaptation.”
The same applies to the players, according to Francisco, as a new roster needs time to build chemistry.
“Every player will find the keys that are within their reach, and that is how teams like Panathinaikos or Olympiacos go far.”
NBA dream remains alive
Finally, Francisco addressed his NBA clause, which has been one of the biggest topics surrounding his future. The French guard confirmed that the clause will expire soon and that his NBA ambition remains unchanged.
“If I have a clause, it is there for a reason. I have always had the goal of playing in the NBA.”
However, with the deadline approaching, the situation will become clear very soon.
“The clause expires on July 20, so everything will be very clear very quickly.”
For now, Francisco is preparing for a new chapter with Asvel, where he will be expected to lead an ambitious project aiming to challenge Europe’s elite.
