Tauranga Whai vs Wellington Saints Preview
Even though they are sitting right on the edge of the playoff zone, we feel that the Tauranga Whai are the main dark horse this year capable of beating any team in the league. They should be able to make the playoffs and we wouldn´t be surprised if they claimed at least one serious scalp in the postseason. The reason why we see them as a sleeping giant is because of tremendous quality and experience they possess – Tauranga rely on three New Zealand national team players, Taine Murray, Reuben Te Rangi and Jordan Ngatai, who arrived midseason and will play against his native Wellington club today. The hosts also have excellent Australian imports, Nicolas Tata and Nicholas Stoddart, along with very important role players, Xanda Marsters and Jayden Bezzant. Last week in the massive 50-point loss at home against the main title favourites Auckland, they were seriously undermanned without almost their entire starting five because of injuries and national team call-ups. They were without Murray, Te Rangi and Ngatai, who were playing for New Zealand, while point guard Nicholas Stoddart was nursing an injury. All of those key pieces will be back for today´s clash, so we are expecting a good performance by Tauranga.
With seasoned veterans like Te Rangi and Ngatai, the hosts should be able to put up a strong fight this Friday. The Saints are vulnerable this season and haven´t been beating teams by big margins like last season. Recently, Tauranga managed to take the vice-champions Southland all the way to overtime and only lost by six points, so today´s matchup should be relatively tight.
The defending champions are experiencing a solid year as they are sitting in fourth place in the standings with an 11-4 W- record. The Saints are mostly winning, but they are losing the big derbies against their main title competitors. Also, when they win, it is not as convincing as last season when they were crushing teams. On paper, Wellington should be steamrolling the competition because they have a great core with Carlin Davison, Elijah Pepper, Akech Aliir, Donte Ingram and Jordan Hunt, which was reinforced even more throughout this season with Hyrum Harris and Brayden Iuli. Wellington have won their last three consecutive matches, but all of those victories were narrow with the exception of the 81:67 defensive masterclass against the Franklin Bulls. The Giants took them to overtime and only lost by two points, while in their last game, they beat the Otago Nuggets on the road at the buzzer. In those matches, they were slightly shorthanded without Carlin Davison, but that is not an excuse for lackluster defensive performances. Also, in the last few weeks, their main import and top scorer of the league, Elijah Pepper, missed some games due to an injury, while sharpshooter Izayah Le´Afa has reinjured himself and will not be in the lineup today.
The guests should be able to win today, but it will not be easy. The hosts have the scoring punch and the defensive setup to keep up with the Saints at home. Whai´s veterans know what it takes to handle a top dog like Wellington and, since we are at the very end of the regular season, the hosts will be playing with extra urgency in front of their fans to book a playoff spot.
