Rounds 2 and 3 are done, four teams are still unbeaten, and Real Madrid and Maccabi Tel Aviv are still searching for a first win. Mike James’s Achilles injury has also changed the outlook for Anadolu Efes. Here is the full 1-20 ranking after the first double round.
Dubai
The league’s boldest experiment enters year two of a five-year wildcard. Dubai has a modern arena, a global city behind it, and a fan base it is building from almost nothing. That last part is the point. Every other club in this list inherited an identity. Dubai has to manufacture one, in public, against opponents with a century of memory. Real Madrid’s opening-night visit on 24 September is the kind of fixture the project was created for. Dubai’s identity is ambition without apology. Whether that becomes belonging depends on what the next four seasons look like inside the building.
