Olympiacos confirmed that Thomas Walkup notified the club in writing of his decision and requested his immediate release. The Greek powerhouse does not recognize the termination and expects the 33-year-old to report for the team’s preseason medical and fitness examinations on August 20.

Olympiacos does not recognize Walkup’s termination request
Olympiacos has made clear that it considers Walkup’s contract valid through the summer of 2027 and expects him to attend the team’s scheduled medical and fitness examinations on August 20.
In its statement, the club said:
“Basketball player Thomas Walkup today notified Olympiacos in writing of the unilateral termination of his contract, requesting his immediate release without cause.
Olympiacos categorically states that the player’s contract remains valid until the summer of 2027. Consequently, we expect him to arrive in Greece on Thursday, August 20, for the scheduled medical and fitness examinations.
Otherwise, Olympiacos reserves the right to pursue every legal remedy available to protect its rights.”
Therefore, Walkup’s request has not resulted in an accepted release from the club, with Olympiacos maintaining that the agreement remains in force.
Greek media report that the two sides are expected to resolve their differences through legal proceedings, with the dispute potentially heading to court.
Walkup signed a contract extension with Olympiacos in April 2023 that runs through the summer of 2027. The next major development is expected on August 20, when the club expects him to attend its preseason medical and fitness examinations.
Dubai interest in Thomas Walkup
Dubai had already emerged as a potential destination for Walkup earlier this summer.
Reports in July suggested that Dubai were prepared to offer Thomas Walkup a lucrative contract, with a potential two-year deal worth around $6 million and a possible three-year package approaching $9 million.
Dubai also reportedly submitted a $600,000 buyout offer to Olympiacos, but the Greek club rejected it.
