A major tragedy has struck the Philippines, as two students from Ateneo de Manila University, Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia, have died.
This happened after the two Ateneo players drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Rene Baterbonia was only 19 years old, while Divine Adili was just 21 at the time the tragedy occurred, and Ateneo University also issued a statement regarding the incident.
“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time. We respectfully ask for privacy and space for all those grieving as they come to terms with this profound loss,” Ateneo said in a statement.
The national basketball association (SBP) also commented on the matter, expressing its condolences to the families of the victims.
“As the national sports association for basketball, the SBP has been in communication with the university’s basketball officials to determine what assistance may be needed, with particular attention given to those most affected by this tragic incident. During this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with the families, teammates, coaches, friends and the entire Ateneo community. We join them in mourning this heartbreaking loss and offer our prayers for strength, comfort and healing.”
The tragic accident happened less than a week after Baterbonia arrived at the Ateneo campus in Katipunan, Quezon City, where he was expected to make his UAAP Season 89 debut later this year. Meanwhile, Nigerian player Adili had already suited up for Ateneo during Season 88.
