The reported physical altercation between Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo in Las Vegas may have been sparked by social media comments, but according to multiple NBA insiders, the tension between the two former Miami Heat teammates had been building for years.
On Friday, Shams Charania reported that Adebayo confronted Herro at a practice court inside a Las Vegas hotel after learning about direct messages in which the guard allegedly questioned whether Adebayo deserved a $60 million-per-year contract. The verbal exchange quickly escalated, with Adebayo reportedly punching Herro in front of several witnesses before security intervened.
However, the disagreement appears to be only the latest chapter in a much deeper story that has surrounded the Heat organization for years.
Bam Adebayo was always Miami’s “chosen one”
According to longtime Miami Heat insider Barry Jackson, several former Heat players privately felt frustrated by the way the organization consistently treated Adebayo differently from everyone else.
“What we can tell you is that there has been some level of resentment from multiple former Heat players that Bam was the chosen one here and was given a big-money contract extension by the Heat and was never subjected to trade rumors.”
Among the players reportedly unhappy with that situation were Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler.
While both attempted to establish themselves as franchise leaders during their time in Miami, the organization continually viewed Adebayo as the player around whom the future would be built.
The Heat rewarded him with a massive contract extension, publicly supported him through every stage of his career and consistently kept him out of trade discussions, even when other stars were regularly linked with blockbuster deals.
Bam’s standing inside the Heat organization
NBA insider Marc Stein explained just how highly Adebayo is regarded within the franchise.
“He is Heat royalty for Micky Arison, Nick Arison, Pat Riley.”
Stein went even further, comparing Adebayo’s status to that of franchise legend Udonis Haslem.
“He is the modern-day Udonis Haslem. They consider him the absolute franchise pillar.”
According to Stein, Adebayo’s influence extends well beyond the locker room.
“He is the untouchable there. He is an extension of Pat Riley, Spo, ownership.”
Those comments help explain why some players may have believed Adebayo was operating under a different set of expectations than everyone else.

Shams reveals what happened in Las Vegas
Speaking about the incident, Shams Charania revealed that the confrontation began after Adebayo addressed Herro over private Instagram messages that had reportedly leaked online.
“There were some leaked direct messages on Instagram where Tyler Herro was critiquing Bam Adebayo and his viability as a $60 million player.”
According to Charania, the conversation quickly became physical.
“Bam approached Tyler Herro about this. They had a back and forth that ended with them getting into it physically where Bam Adebayo struck Tyler Herro.”
The altercation reportedly happened on a practice court inside a Las Vegas hotel while multiple teams were using the facility.
“There were other players around, multiple teams that used this practice court. This was in a pretty public domain.”
Charania also noted that he had not heard of any NBA investigation into the incident at this stage.
The numbers behind Miami’s franchise cornerstone
Despite the criticism surrounding his contract, Adebayo once again produced strong numbers during the previous season.
In 73 games, the All-Star center averaged:
- 20.1 points
- 10.0 rebounds
- 3.2 assists
while shooting 44.2% from the field and 31.8% from three-point range.
A relationship that may have been broken long before Las Vegas
Although the punch in Las Vegas grabbed headlines, reports from respected insiders suggest the real story goes back much further.
For years, Bam Adebayo was treated as the unquestioned foundation of the Miami Heat, while players such as Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler reportedly felt they never received the same level of trust from the organization.
The altercation in Las Vegas may have been triggered by social media messages, but according to those close to the situation, it was likely the result of frustrations that had been building behind the scenes throughout their years together in Miami.
