When Barcelona signed Tyrese Martin, the club did not add another high-usage scorer or an established EuroLeague name. Instead, it brought in the type of versatile forward every coach values – a player capable of defending multiple positions, rebounding above his position and making winning plays without dominating the ball.

After 122 NBA appearances with the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, Tyrese Martin arrives in Europe for the first time carrying the profile of a proven role player whose physical tools and team-first mentality could translate well to the EuroLeague.

Standing at 198 centimeters and weighing 98 kilograms, the American combines strength, athleticism and positional versatility, allowing him to play both shooting guard and small forward. Barcelona is betting on a player who embraces the less glamorous aspects of the game while still possessing enough offensive skill to punish defenses that underestimate him.

The Catalan club is not asking Martin to become the face of the offense. Instead, it is investing in a forward capable of bringing balance to both ends of the floor, complementing Barcelona’s creators with defense, rebounding, floor spacing and relentless energy.

ARE WE ABOUT TO WITNESS A HISTORIC REBUILD IN BARCELONA? 👀🔵🔴

The Spanish club have already introduced NINE new additions, including their new head coach:

A physical forward built around versatility and doing the dirty work

Tyrese Martin’s greatest strength has never been one elite offensive skill. Instead, it is the combination of several above-average qualities that allow him to positively impact games without needing plays designed specifically for him. Players with Martin’s profile rarely dominate headlines, but they consistently earn coaches’ trust.

Throughout both his college career and his time in the NBA, Martin developed a reputation as someone willing to do the small things that often decide games. Whether crashing the boards, sprinting back in transition, defending physically or accepting a complementary offensive role, his approach has always been built around helping his team win rather than chasing individual numbers.

That mentality was already evident before he entered the NBA. Martin has always been the type of player willing to do all the little things and embrace the dirty work that often decides games.

Physically, Martin is built for modern basketball. At 198 centimeters and 98 kilograms, he possesses the size to compete with bigger forwards while maintaining enough mobility to defend guards. His strength allows him to absorb contact offensively and battle through physical matchups defensively, making him a versatile option capable of fitting multiple lineup combinations.

One of the most underrated parts of Martin’s game is his rebounding. Despite spending most of his minutes on the perimeter, he consistently rebounds at a level usually associated with bigger forwards. During his rookie G League season with the College Park Skyhawks, he averaged 9.1 rebounds per game while also scoring 18 points. A year later with the Iowa Wolves, he followed that with 17.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest.

Those numbers reflect more than athletic ability. Martin attacks the glass aggressively, reads long rebounds well and is willing to fight for second possessions. That extra effort frequently creates transition opportunities while reducing pressure on the team’s frontcourt.

Defensively, his biggest strength is versatility rather than individual dominance. He may never become the type of defender who completely shuts down elite scorers, but he has the physical profile to switch across multiple positions, battle stronger forwards and compete against bigger guards.

For Barcelona, that flexibility could prove extremely valuable. Modern EuroLeague basketball increasingly rewards players capable of fitting different defensive schemes without forcing coaches to constantly adjust their rotations. Martin’s combination of size, strength and effort gives Barcelona another player capable of surviving in multiple matchups.

A developing shooter with NBA experience

Coming out of college, one of the biggest questions surrounding Martin’s game was whether he could become a reliable perimeter shooter.

While his athleticism and physical profile attracted NBA attention, his outside shot was viewed as inconsistent. Over the past several seasons, however, Martin has quietly developed into a respectable floor spacer, significantly improving one of the biggest concerns evaluators had before the 2022 NBA Draft.

His best NBA season came with the Brooklyn Nets, where he averaged 8.7 points while shooting 35.1 percent from three-point range across 60 appearances. Perhaps the best example of his offensive potential came against the Phoenix Suns, when Martin exploded for a career-high 30 points while knocking down eight of his 10 attempts from beyond the arc. Performances like that illustrate the type of scorer Martin can become when he finds rhythm.

Still, his offensive value is not built around difficult shot-making. Martin is most effective as a catch-and-shoot player who capitalizes on defensive mistakes rather than forcing offense on his own. He understands spacing, moves well without the ball and is comfortable relocating after making the extra pass, traits that should translate naturally into Barcelona’s offensive system.

His shooting becomes even more valuable because of what happens after defenders begin respecting it. Unlike many spot-up forwards, Martin is capable of attacking aggressive closeouts with one or two decisive dribbles before finishing at the rim or making the simple pass to the next open teammate.

He rarely overcomplicates possessions. Instead of hunting difficult shots, Martin generally plays within the flow of the offense, making quick decisions that keep possessions moving. That style often goes unnoticed, but it is exactly the type of basketball successful EuroLeague teams rely on over a long season.

Another encouraging sign came during his final stint in the G League before arriving in Europe. In just three appearances with the Delaware Blue Coats, Martin averaged an incredible 31.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists while shooting nearly 57 percent from three-point range. Although the sample size was small, those performances demonstrated the complete offensive package he can display when given greater responsibility.

The challenge now is consistency. EuroLeague defenses are significantly more disciplined than those Martin often faced in the NBA, where spacing naturally creates driving lanes and open perimeter looks. European opponents will test whether his shooting can consistently punish defenses that choose to help off him.

Martin does not need to become one of Barcelona’s primary scorers. He simply needs to remain efficient enough that opponents cannot ignore him beyond the three-point line. If he does that, his physicality, movement and decision-making become considerably more valuable.

The biggest question: Can Tyrese Martin consistently create offense in the half court?

The biggest concern surrounding Tyrese Martin is not whether he can score. It is whether he can consistently create offense once the game slows down.

Throughout his career, Martin has been at his best playing alongside primary creators rather than functioning as one himself. He can attack closeouts, finish in transition and make simple reads, but he has never been an advanced shot creator capable of generating efficient offense possession after possession.

That limitation becomes more noticeable in the EuroLeague. Unlike the NBA, where pace and spacing frequently create advantages, European defenses force players to execute in tighter spaces and make decisions under constant pressure.

Martin has shown flashes of scoring off the dribble, but his handle is functional rather than elite. Against smaller defenders, he can use his strength to create space, yet quicker perimeter defenders may still force him into uncomfortable situations.

There is also the question of offensive assertiveness. Throughout his career, Martin has shown a tendency to prioritize ball movement and team basketball over aggressively looking for his own shot. While that approach fits well in a complementary role, he will need to remain confident and willing to punish defenses when opportunities appear.

For some teams, that might be viewed as a weakness. For Barcelona, however, it could actually fit the team’s offensive philosophy, provided Martin remains confident enough to punish open opportunities instead of passing them up.

    Umoja Gibson

Umoja Gibson scouting report: Strengths, weaknesses, and fit in Barcelona’s new backcourt

    Why Tyrese Martin fits Barcelona

Barcelona’s decision to sign Tyrese Martin reflects more than simply adding another player with NBA experience. It is a move that addresses several needs at once.

His ability to play both shooting guard and small forward gives the coaching staff greater lineup flexibility. Depending on the matchup, he can defend physical forwards, switch onto bigger guards or provide additional rebounding alongside Barcelona’s frontcourt.

That versatility is increasingly valuable in modern EuroLeague basketball, where coaches constantly search for players who can remain effective regardless of the lineup on the floor.

Perhaps the biggest reason Martin makes sense in Barcelona is that he does not require the offense to be built around him. He understands how to play alongside high-usage teammates, making quick decisions instead of holding the ball or forcing difficult shots. That approach should allow Barcelona’s primary creators to operate with more space while Martin focuses on moving without the ball, spacing the floor and attacking defensive mistakes.

His NBA experience should also ease the physical adjustment to European basketball. Unlike many first-year EuroLeague players, Martin has already spent several seasons competing against elite athletes. The challenge will not be matching the physicality of the competition, but adapting to a more tactical game built around half-court execution, defensive discipline and constant off-ball movement.

Barcelona is also adding a player entering what should be the prime years of his career. At 27 years old, Martin is no longer viewed as a long-term prospect, but neither has he reached the stage where physical decline becomes a concern. He arrives in Europe with enough professional experience to contribute immediately while still possessing room to grow within a completely new basketball environment.

If Martin adapts quickly to the tactical demands of the EuroLeague, Barcelona could have found one of the more valuable complementary forwards of the offseason. He may never lead the team in scoring, but players with his profile often become essential because of everything they contribute beyond the box score.

    Stanley Umude

Stanley Umude scouting report: Strengths, weaknesses, and fit in Aleksandar Sekulic’s Barcelona

    Final verdict

Tyrese Martin represents exactly the type of signing that often goes under the radar before proving extremely valuable over the course of a season.

Barcelona is not bringing in a player expected to average 20 points or carry the offense. Instead, the club is adding a physically imposing forward who understands his role, embraces defensive responsibilities and contributes in nearly every aspect of the game.

His combination of size, rebounding, athleticism and improving perimeter shooting provides a strong foundation for success in European basketball. Just as importantly, his willingness to accept a complementary role should allow him to fit naturally alongside Barcelona’s established offensive options.

The biggest question is whether he can consistently produce in the half court against the more structured defenses of the EuroLeague. His ball-handling and self-creation remain the least polished parts of his offensive game, meaning efficiency and decision-making will be crucial to his success.

If his shooting remains reliable and he embraces the role Barcelona has envisioned for him, Tyrese Martin has every opportunity to become one of the smartest and most effective signings of the club’s summer.
