The New York Knicks became NBA champions for the first time in 53 years after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the NBA Finals, clinching the title with a 94-90 road victory.
The New York Knicks had waited a long time for this moment, and they finally achieved it. Jalen Brunson, the unquestioned hero of the championship run, once again led the way. With the performance he delivered against the towering Victor Wembanyama, it became clear that the championship ring was within reach.
Brunson was named Finals MVP, which came as no surprise after he scored 45 points in the title-clinching game. In doing so, he became the first player in New York Knicks history to score more than 40 points in an NBA Finals game.
Things did not start well for the visitors, however. Not at all. The Knicks managed just 13 points in the opening quarter, while the Spurs showcased the elite defense that carried them throughout the season.
From that point on, though, New York began to find its rhythm. Possession by possession, the deficit shrank, but the game remained under San Antonio’s control until the final 12 minutes.
Then Brunson took over. He sparked a 10-0 run and virtually carried the team by himself during that stretch, leading the comeback and putting an end to any doubt about who would emerge victorious in the Finals. The road team secured the third NBA championship in franchise history.
Alongside Brunson’s 45 points, Mikal Bridges added 14. For the Spurs, Dylan Harper scored 25 points, while Victor Wembanyama finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
