The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 at home in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, taking a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.
The Knicks are now just one win away from the championship after overcoming a 29-point deficit, the largest comeback in NBA Finals history.
The visitors came out firing from the opening tip, scoring 41 points in the first quarter thanks to excellent three-point shooting (6-for-10), while the home side struggled with turnovers, committing four in the opening period alone. Everything was going the Spurs’ way as they controlled the entire first half and built a massive 27-point advantage heading into the break.
Victor Wembanyama was outstanding, knocking down shots from all over the floor, while the New York side appeared to be on the ropes and in need of a miracle in the second half.
Then came the magic at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks refused to surrender, beginning to chip away at the deficit with their three-point shooting. They knocked down five of their 10 attempts in the third quarter and suddenly a comeback seemed possible.
The Spurs were fortunate that the cushion they built in the first half remained intact, but scoring only 14 points in the third quarter was a major warning sign.
Things did not improve in the fourth quarter, where the miracle was completed. The Knicks used a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits for the first time in a long while, and all the momentum was on their side. The Spurs began to tighten up under pressure, and Jalen Brunson buried a three-pointer to bring New York within one point, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
The closing moments had everything. Brunson delivered a basket that gave the Knicks a historic lead, but Stephon Castle responded from the free-throw line to put San Antonio back in front. New York then had one final possession, one that could potentially decide the NBA championship race. The ball found Brunson, whose three-point attempt missed, but seemingly out of nowhere, OG Anunoby soared in for the game-winning putback, sealing the victory for the Knicks.
Jalen Brunson led the winners with 36 points, while OG Anunoby added 33. For the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama recorded a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
