San Pablo Burgos has announced troubling news ahead of the upcoming stretch of the season. Slovenian forward and former NBA champion Vlatko Cancar suffered a serious knee injury during a practice session and will undergo surgery.
According to the official medical report provided by the club, the power forward made an awkward movement during Tuesday’s practice. He was immediately sent for comprehensive medical evaluations and an MRI scan.
Surgery in Munich and another spell on the sidelines
Thorough medical analysis confirmed the worst fears of the team’s doctors: Cancar suffered a torn medial meniscus in his left knee. Due to the nature of the injury, conservative treatment options were ruled out, leaving surgical intervention as the only viable path forward. Cancar will travel to Munich on Monday to undergo surgery.

Left knee struck once again
This latest development comes as a severe physical and mental blow to the 29-year-old forward, particularly because it involves the exact same knee that has previously plagued his career.
The most painful setback in the Cancar’s career occurred in August 2023 during an international friendly between Slovenia and Greece in Copenhagen. Landing after a dunk, Cancar suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. That devastating injury required extensive rehabilitation and forced him to miss the entire 2023-24 NBA season with the Denver Nuggets.
Prior to that, during his stint with the Colorado franchise, where he won an NBA championship ring, Cancar three months in 2022 after sustaining a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his foot.
