Wellington Saints vs Canterbury Rams Preview
The defending champions have shown weaknesses and vulnerability this season, but despite their troubles, they are in solid fourth place in the standings with a 12-4 W-L record. The Saints have secured a playoff berth but are still fighting for a breakthrough into the top 2, which would guarantee direct placement into the semi-finals. As this year has been progressing, Wellington have been reinforcing with familiar faces like Hyrum Harris and Brayden Iuli, while sharpshooter Izayah Le´Afa returned from an injury after the first few rounds, but will be unavailable today. After all the roster movement, Wellington now possess seven to eight legitimate scoring options and will be the main dark horse in the playoffs. In the first head-to-head clash against Canterbury early on in April at the newly opened Parakiore Arena, Wellington didn´t have the bench depth they have now and they also struggled in an arena where they were playing for the first time ever. Their players simply couldn´t figure out the new rims and consequently the Rams blew them out by 22 points. That loss definitely hurts the reigning champions, who will be eager to exact revenge this Sunday in their fortress.
Many pundits have written off Wellington and are preferring Auckland and Southland to win the title. We completely disagree and think that the Saints should be one of the main title favourites, especially because they now had a couple of weeks to train and develop chemistry with their new additions and the rest of their roster.
The Canterbury Rams have turned into perennial title contenders after winning back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. They are expected to cruise past the weaker teams and regularly compete against the top dogs – they have beaten inferior teams this year, but interestingly, they lost almost all of the derbies. Their only big win was against today´s opponents when the Saints were undermanned and looked completely lost in the hostile environment of Parakiore. Three days ago, in the home clash against the Taranaki Airs, the Rams were expected to win easily and dismantle their opponents who were without their two main scoring options, but the Airs fought hard as their season was hanging in the air. Taranaki were even leading by around ten points in the second half, but Canterbury somehow escaped because of their individual class. In that game, the absence of Rams´ main point guard and national team player Taylor Britt was more than felt as Walter Brown was struggling to get accustomed to the point guard position. Britt has been listed as questionable for today´s massive derby – his absence would be a big blow, but even if he features, we are still expecting the hosts to win.
This Sunday will be extremely tough for Canterbury. They could be without their main creator Taylor Britt and they will be facing the best team in the country at the moment in terms of quality besides the Auckland Tuatara.
