After weeks of waiting following his departure from Barcelona, Willy Hernangomez has finally found a new team, with Unicaja officially announcing his signing.
As reported, Willy Hernangomez signed a one-year deal with the Malaga-based club, where he will replace Olek Balcerowski, who left Unicaja a few days ago to join Barcelona.
The 32-year-old center faces a very different scenario compared to previous years, as he will be playing in the FIBA Champions League next season – a clear step down from the EuroLeague, though that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Playing for one of the marquee clubs in the competition, at least in terms of roster quality, could help relaunch his career following three very difficult seasons in Barcelona.
His talent has never been in question, especially on the offensive end, and he arrives in Malaga eager to prove he is still a top-level center.
Working under Unicaja’s new head coach, Txus Vidorreta, could also prove beneficial for Hernangomez. The two previously collaborated on the Spanish national team during Vidorreta’s tenure as an assistant on Sergio Scariolo’s staff.
Vidorreta has a track record of developing premier big men, having molded Giorgi Shermadini and Fran Guerra at Tenerife in recent years, as well as Tiago Splitter during his time in Bilbao. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the 32-year-old rediscover his elite form under the veteran strategist’s guidance.
