Zalgiris vs Lietkabelis Preview
When you record 37 wins in 38 games across the domestic league and cup competitions, there is nothing else to say except that you are having an outstanding season. Zalgiris are on their way to completing one of the best seasons in the history of Lithuanian basketball, at least when it comes to domestic competitions. Their only defeat came back in October, when they were beaten by Lietkabelis, but after that loss they responded with an incredible streak of 34 consecutive victories – 30 in the domestic league and four in the Lithuanian Cup. After comfortably finishing first in the regular season standings, Zalgiris continued their winning run in the playoffs as well, easily defeating Jonava in just two games to secure a spot in the semifinals.
Zalgiris had no problems in either the first or second game, as they had already decided the winner by halftime in both matchups. The games against Jonava were used as a kind of preparation for the final stage of the season and for much tougher opponents ahead. Besides the convincing and comfortable victories, this was also reflected in the distribution of playing time, which was extremely well balanced. Only Deividas Syrvidis played more than 20 minutes, and he exceeded that mark by just 12 seconds. Syrvidis continued his run of very strong performances, which is certainly encouraging for basketball fans in Lithuania. The only player who played fewer than 15 minutes was Mantas Rubstavicius, but it appears that his time with Zalgiris is over, as he is expected to continue his career in the NCAA. In addition to the balanced minutes, the roles were also distributed very well, allowing every player to show the kind of shooting form they are currently in. We believe that in this series the rotation will be adjusted somewhat differently and that key players such as Sylvain Francisco and Moses Wright will receive more minutes if necessary.
Unlike their opponents in this matchup, who are enjoying an excellent season, the same cannot be said for Lietkabelis. Throughout most of the season, the team coached by Nenad Canak struggled badly to establish any rhythm, and losses came more often than victories. There is little need to spend too many words on their disappointing EuroCup campaign, as they were eliminated very early. They entered the playoffs on a three-game losing streak from the regular season, and many expected their season to end quickly. However, they managed to surprise Siauliai, who were considered favorites in that series, and advanced to the semifinals, which was probably the team’s main objective before the season started. Despite eliminating Siauliai, it is very difficult to expect them to seriously challenge Zalgiris in this series.
After winning the first game in a dramatic finish thanks to a basket by Jamel Morris, Lietkabelis looked much more confident at home in the second matchup. Following an evenly contested first half, Lietkabelis played a very strong second half, especially in the third quarter where they built a large advantage and then comfortably closed out the game. By far the best performance in a Lietkabelis jersey came from Nikola Radicevic, who scored 22 points. Right behind him were Kristian Kullamae and Jamel Morris, who have been the team’s main offensive leaders over the past few months. Kullamae, who returned from the Liga Endesa, recently praised head coach Nenad Canak in a major interview and admitted that he had not really considered returning to Lietkabelis after a disappointing season in Bilbao. There is no aspect of the game in which Lietkabelis hold an advantage over Zalgiris, and it is very difficult to imagine them winning this best-of-five series.
