French point guard Sylvain Francisco has left Asvel in a late-night blockbuster transfer after less than a month and will become the latest reinforcement for Panathinaikos.
Sylvain Francisco was supposed to be the marquee signing for Asvel, but a difficult financial situation – caused by lower-than-expected investments – opened the door for Panathinaikos to pay his buyout clause and sign the 28-year-old to a three-year contract valued at north of 10 million euros.
The French point guard has become the fifth signing for the Greek powerhouse, following the earlier arrivals of Guerschon Yabusele, Isaac Bonga, Brancou Badio, and Moustapha Fall to Athens.
He could prove to be perhaps the most significant signing of them all, primarily due to his on-court qualities, but also because he was the missing piece Zeljko Obradovic needed to complete the roster puzzle.

Obradovic’s new backcourt vision
Dimitris Giannakopoulos spared no expense this summer, likely further infuriated by the fact that Olympiacos won their fourth EuroLeague title right in the Telekom Center, Panathinaikos’ home arena. An incredible team has been assembled, and Sylvain Francisco is the final piece to complete one of the best rosters ever put together in EuroLeague history.
Although he played at a very high level prior to last season as well, the Frenchman reached the level of Europe’s top point guards during the 2025/26 season. He was the main catalyst in Zalgiris‘ pursuit of a domestic double, while also leading the Lithuanian side to the EuroLeague playoffs after finishing fifth in the regular season, where they were ultimately stopped by Fenerbahce.
Panathinaikos struggled at the point guard position last season, as TJ Shorts failed to adjust to Ergin Ataman’s system, while Kostas Sloukas – despite being one of the best ever at his position – has reached an age where he can no longer play heavy minutes and have the same influence on the game.
Obradovic did not want to fall into the same trap, so he parted ways with Shorts and went on the hunt for a new starting point guard, allowing him to use Sloukas off the bench – a role much better suited to him at this stage of his career.

How Francisco fits Panathinaikos
Francisco will bring a complete modern point guard to Panathinaikos. He boasts a very solid three-point shot (38.6% in the EuroLeague last season) and can play off the ball, which is crucial when sharing the floor with ball-dominant players like Kendrick Nunn or Nigel Hayes-Davis.
At the same time, his speed and low center of gravity make him extremely shifty and almost unguardable. When driving to the basket, he can leave defenders in the dust or blow past them with his handle. This is precisely what made him one of the best guards in the entire competition when it comes to finishing at the rim.
However, perhaps even more importantly for a team as stacked as Panathinaikos, Sylvain Francisco knows how to get his teammates involved. The fact that he is extraordinarily dangerous when he gets hot forces defenses to collapse, leaving his teammates wide open for him to feed. Mathias Lessort and Guerschon Yabusele, above all, stand to thrive in the pick game, enjoying several easy points per contest.
Adapting his role in a stacked roster
His offensive versatility brings a level of variety that Obradovic, if anyone, knows how to exploit through his tactical sets.
Is it realistic to expect him to replicate the statistical output he had at Zalgiris? No, but that stems from the fact that he will have a vastly different role here than in previous seasons. Unlike past years, the entire offense won’t rest on his shoulders, and the team won’t live or die solely by what he produces. On the other hand, he will be the primary offensive catalyst when it comes to creating for others, tasked with keeping everyone “fed” with enough touches to stay happy, which will be vital for building chemistry on a roster packed with superstars.
