Alen Smailagic will leave Partizan and move to another EuroLeague club, Zalgiris, as reported by Mozzartsport and Meridiansport.
Alen Smailagic will thus become another player to depart the black-and-white team during this offseason. Before him, Kevin Punter, Ognjen Jaramaz and Zach LeDay also left.
Also, many players’ contracts have expired. Uros Trifunovic, PJ Dozier, Frank Kaminsky, Jaleen Smith, Danilo Andjusic, and James Nunnally are without contracts, but the club has not yet officially parted ways with them.
The former Golden State Warriors player defended the colors of Partizan for three seasons, with varying success influenced significantly by off-court factors.
In the 2022/23 season, he had a standout series against Real Madrid, posing a significant threat to Walter Tavares, and it seemed that the upcoming period could be the brightest for the power forward/center.
However, things turned out differently. Due to an infection he contracted, he wasn’t ready for the biggest challenges at the beginning of the following season, which also affected his performances in the months that followed.
This season, he averaged 5.5 points and 2.2 rebounds over 31 games played in the EuroLeague. In the ABA League, he played 23 games with averages of 5.3 points and 2.1 rebounds.
Because of these challenges, it was difficult for both Partizan and the player himself to find common ground regarding their future collaboration. As things stand, Zalgiris seized the opportunity, and Smailagic will now try to rejuvenate his career under the guidance of Andrea Trinchieri.
