How the 2026-27 season works
Fourteen clubs play each other twice, which comes to twenty-six games. The opening round is on October 10.
The top six go straight to the quarterfinals. Seventh through tenth play a play-in for the last two places. The bottom two drop to Liga Leumit.
That leaves four clubs playing for survival and four playing for a ticket. Only the middle of the table has a quiet spring.
Fifty-eight titles, and twelve for everyone else
The league has crowned seventy champions since 1954. Fifty-eight of them were Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Six clubs have taken the rest. Hapoel Tel Aviv has five, Hapoel Holon and Hapoel Jerusalem two each, and Hapoel Galil Elyon, Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Rishon LeZion one apiece.
Maccabi Haifa is not even in the division any more. That is how thin the history of winning is outside Tel Aviv.
Five clubs are playing in Europe
Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv are in the EuroLeague. Hapoel Jerusalem plays the EuroCup, and Hapoel Holon and Bnei Herzliya are in the Champions League.
Five of fourteen is a heavy European load for a league this size. It also means the domestic schedule bends around midweek trips for the clubs at the top.
European home games are played outside Israel
Israeli clubs in EuroLeague and EuroCup do not host those games at home. They play them at neutral venues elsewhere in Europe.
That arrangement was confirmed again in September 2026, after EuroLeague officials met Maccabi Tel Aviv. The domestic league is separate and its games are played in Israel.
