Frankfurt welcomed the German basketball team, who, for the first time in history, clinched the championship at the FIBA World Cup.
Led by Dennis Schroder, Germany defeated the Serbian national team in the final to become world champions. They arrived at Frankfurt Airport on Monday, where they were given a warm reception.
“I hope we can inspire both children and the elderly to take up basketball,” Schroder said.
His words come after the tournament wasn’t broadcast on television in a country where football is the number one sport until the final.
“This group of guys is the best 12 players, the best team Germany has ever seen. They are also great individuals,” stated coach Gordon Herbert.
Germany claimed the title without losing a single game. After their gold medal at the 1993 European Championship under coach Svetislav Pesic, they went on to earn bronze at the 2002 World Cup and the 2022 European Championship.
A reception for the Serbian basketball team is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 8:00 PM in the capital city.
