Damian Lillard is definitively leaving Portland. The team’s star player has officially requested a trade, signaling that it’s time for a parting of ways.
Three months ago, there were reports that Damian Lillard was contemplating leaving Portland and had a strong desire to join the Miami Heat, the reigning NBA runner-up. Adrian Wojnarowski extensively covered the situation on his Twitter account at the end of June.
Back then, it seemed like the situation would be resolved quickly. However, it didn’t turn out that way. As time passed, rumors about Lillard’s departure grew quieter. Now, the player himself has decided there’s no turning back and has requested a trade.
Nevertheless, it won’t be easy. Portland will have a significant say in this process as they aim to get the maximum value for their best player. The club has set a deadline for other teams to submit their offers by October 2nd.
Several teams are being mentioned as potential new destinations for Lillard. He has expressed a desire to go to Miami, which he hasn’t hidden in the past. His wish is to team up with Jimmy Butler and make a run for the championship together. However, the Florida team is not the only option.
Chicago, Utah, and Phoenix are also mentioned as teams in the running to acquire Lillard. It’s possible that the talented player could join forces with a Serbian coach, Darko Rajakovic, in Toronto, which is another option.
Lillard spent 11 seasons in Portland, with his greatest success coming in the 2018/19 season when he reached the Western Conference Finals. Unfortunately, they were defeated by a strong Golden State team. Regarding the last season, the experienced point guard averaged 32 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
