Karl-Anthony Towns, star player for the Minnesota Timberwolves, addressed the media after their Game 5 loss in the NBA Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.
Minnesota’s formidable defense, featuring four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, appeared vulnerable against the potent duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Additionally, the Timberwolves’ offense faltered, with Towns struggling in the first three losses before rebounding to average 26.5 points on 54.5% shooting and 8.5 rebounds in Games 4 and 5.
In Game 5, Towns avoided foul trouble, a stark contrast to Game 4, where he fouled out. Despite his improved performance, the Timberwolves trailed by 29 at halftime and as many as 36 points at one stage, leading to their elimination.
Towns, the Timberwolves’ top draft pick in 2015 and their longest-tenured player, expressed his commitment to the team and his desire to win an NBA championship with Minnesota.
“I’ve been here nine years, and I would love for the tenure to keep going,” Towns said. The 28-year-old, who has four years left on his contract (including a player option for the 2027-28 season), elaborated on his dedication to the team.
“I’m confident I’ll be able to be here with my brothers and continue what I love to do here at home,” Towns stated. “Nothing’s changed on my side. I love this city. I love this organization. It’s given me my life, me and my family.”
When asked if the current team, with key rotation player Kyle Anderson becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer, has shown enough promise to convince potential new owners to keep the roster intact, Towns remained focused on his role.
“That’s not for me to worry about,” Towns said. “My job is to go out there every day and do something this summer in the offseason to continue taking steps forward in my game and mentality, not only as a player but as a person.”
Towns concluded with optimism for the future: “I’m excited for next season when I walk in for training camp. I’ll not only showcase my growth as a player throughout the season but also my growth as a man. I can’t speak on [new ownership]. I can’t control that.“
