Patrick Beverley, a Milwaukee Bucks player, reflected on his time in Europe, specifically the period when he wore the Olympiacos jersey.
Beverley vividly described the atmosphere he experienced in Greece, which is hard to compare with the environment in the USA.
“I remember getting hit in the head with a coin. There were shields over our bench to prevent us from being spit on. Kostas Papanikolaou told me, ‘Pat, don’t go there.’ I asked, ‘Why not? I’m just going to get the ball,’ and then a fan spit on me,” Beverley recounted.
And that wasn’t the end.
“I remember fans stopping games and hanging from the rim. I’m talking about some of the craziest stuff you’ve ever seen in basketball. The atmosphere, you can’t even explain it. You have to go there to understand it,” the American explained.
The Greeks have been and remain a powerhouse in basketball, as evidenced by Panathinaikos winning the EuroLeague title.
