Achille Polonara, the Italian basketball player, recently underwent surgery for a testicular tumor. As he is about to start a cycle of chemotherapy, he will be absent from the court for at least four weeks.
At the beginning of the month, Virtus Bologna announced that Polonara had been diagnosed with a testicular tumor and would need surgery. The surgical procedure was successful, but now the Italian national team player is facing a cycle of chemotherapy.
According to the official statement, due to the necessary step in his treatment, the 31-year-old basketball player will spend at least another four weeks off the court. After that, he will undergo further testing, which will provide a more precise timeline for his return to basketball activities.
The former player of Baskonia, Fenerbahce, Anadolu Efes, and Zalgiris, who was close to joining Red Star earlier this year, signed a two-year contract with Virtus this summer.
Achille Polonara started the season, averaging six points and seven and a half rebounds in the Serie A. He also spent 10 minutes on the court during the premiere against Zalgiris in the EuroLeague, where he recorded three rebounds, as well as an assist and a block.
Virtus has been successful since the start of the season, winning the Italian Super Cup and achieving eight victories in nine official matches, four of which were without Polonara in the team, including a win against Crvena Zvezda in the fourth round of the elite competition.
