Atlanta Hawks, Landry Fields, spoke to the media after his team officially secured the first pick in the upcoming NBA draft.
The Atlanta Hawks will be picking first in the NBA draft for the first time in franchise history. Before the Draft Lottery, the Hawks were given only a 3.0% chance of getting the first pick. The Atlanta Hawks’ GM himself admitted how surprised he was by everything that happened.
“I was shocked. If you look at the percentages, and when I first saw that it wasn’t between 10 and 12, that launched us into the top four. So I was like, ‘Alright, we got a real shot at this thing.’ So, a bit of surprise, but a lot of excitement. I look at it, frankly, as an opportunity. These are the positions that you want to be in.
I mean, there’s a lot of guys. I think it’s a lot of fun to so many different types of guys. So many different variations. We’ll look at it. We’ll dive deep and see what comes in June. It’s how you build teams. You build through the draft, and to have an opportunity to swing as high as we are this year, that’s a really good thing,” Fields said.
The Washington Wizards will have the second pick, while the third pick will belong to the Houston Rockets. San Antonio Spurs also did well, as they will have two picks within the top 10. They will select fourth and eighth overall.
The NBA Draft will be held for the first time over two days, on June 26th and 27th, in Brooklyn.
