Maccabi has advanced to the final of the Israeli Winner Cup after defeating Hapoel from Tel Aviv with an official score of 20-0.
Maccabi will reach the title match without playing a game, as their opponent decided to forfeit the match. The reason for this decision was that the police required the scanning of each fan’s ID card before the game for security reasons.
This led to significant crowds and, ultimately, Hapoel’s decision to concede the match.
The club issued a statement on this matter and sent a message via social media.
“Athletes, not criminals!”, read the headline of the announcement.
“Since this morning, we have been receiving messages indicating that the Israeli police treat this game as a wartime event in which fans will be involved. From eight to 80 years old, women and children – they are all considered potential criminals by them”, stated Hapoel.
The message then explains the reason for their withdrawal.
“In light of the way the audience was treated at the arena entrance, we have decided it makes no sense to play tonight. Sport belongs to the fans!”
Following this decision, Hapoel could face a fine of 100,000 euros.
Maccabi will compete in the tournament final against Hapoel from Jerusalem, which previously had a convincing victory over Hapoel Holon.
“The Pride of Israel” is also preparing for international competition. In the case of the EuroLeague, they will face Partizan in the first round.
