The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to begin their search for a new head coach, with Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego emerging as the leading candidates.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavaliers will start interviewing candidates, focusing initially on Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson and New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego.
Cleveland plans to reach out to additional assistant coaches once they obtain the necessary permissions.
James Borrego, who is also a contender for the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching job, previously served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022. During his tenure, he led the team to consecutive NBA Play-In Tournament appearances.
Kenny Atkinson, on the other hand, spent three seasons as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, amassing a 118-190 record. Atkinson has established strong relationships with current Cavaliers players Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert, both of whom he coached during his stint with the Nets.
As the Cavaliers continue their search, the experience and connections of Atkinson and Borrego make them the top contenders for the position, after they parted way with J.B. Bickerstaff.
