Cedevita Olimpija faced Venezia in the sixth round of the second-highest European club competition, the EuroCup. The Italian team secured a 95-87 win after a significant comeback in the final quarter.
The Slovenian representative displayed both their strengths and weaknesses right from the beginning. They were successful in shooting at a high percentage, giving them an early advantage. They made three out of six attempts from beyond the arc, with a 50% field goal percentage.
However, Venezia capitalized on defensive lapses, and interestingly, they converted all six of their two-point attempts. After ten minutes of play, Cedevita Olimpija held a 27-21 lead, primarily due to their superior three-point shooting.
Amadou Sow had an outstanding performance in the second quarter, and on his shoulders, the Slovenian team maintained their acquired lead. The tandem of Berry Brown and Kyle Wijtler kept the score reasonably close, and at halftime in the “Palasport Taliercio,” the scoreboard displayed a 47-42 advantage in favor of Cedevita Olimpija.
Cedevita Olimpija began the second half on a positive note, with Karlo Matkovic shining in the opponent’s paint and both Jaka Blazic and Karlo Matkovic hitting shots from the outside. For the first time in the match, the Slovenian team established a double-digit lead, even reaching a 13-point advantage at one point. With just ten minutes to go, Venezia found themselves trailing 72-62.
Despite holding an 81-70 lead with six minutes remaining, it appeared that Cedevita Olimpija was on the verge of securing their first EuroCup win this season. However, Venezia completely turned the game in their favor.
They embarked on a 17-3 run, taking a 87-84 lead with just over a minute left. When Marco Spissu sank a three-pointer to make it 90-85, it became clear that Cedevita Olimpija would leave the court as the defeated team for the sixth consecutive time.
Barry Brown was the leading scorer for the victorious team with 21 points, while Rayjon Tucker contributed 19 points. On the losing side, standout performances came from Amadou Sow and Jaka Blazic, each scoring 16 points.
In the next EuroCup round, Cedevita Olimpija will host Hamburg in Ljubljana, while Trento will welcome Cluj Napoca.
