Kenny Atkinson, recently an assistant coach of the Golden State Warriors, has officially become the new head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers on a 5-year deal.
After a brief hiatus from head coaching in the NBA following a surprising departure from the Brooklyn Nets, Kenny Atkinson is set to embark on a new chapter with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers announced on Friday the finalization of a five-year contract with Atkinson, who most recently served as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. This move comes as Cleveland aims to build upon consecutive playoff appearances under the leadership of former head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who departed after a solid tenure.
“We believe Kenny brings a wealth of experience in player development and a strong work ethic that aligns perfectly with our vision for the franchise,” stated Koby Altman, the team’s president of basketball operations. “His proven track record and familiarity with top NBA talent make him an ideal fit to guide our team forward.”
Atkinson, set to be introduced as the Cavaliers’ 24th head coach at a news conference on Monday, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity. “Leading this talented young roster is an incredible privilege,” he remarked. “I’ve admired this group from the opposing bench and look forward to contributing to their continued growth.”
The 57-year-old’s journey to Cleveland was briefly delayed due to his commitments with the French national team in preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Despite this, Atkinson was present during the Cavaliers’ recent draft activities, underscoring his immediate involvement in shaping the team’s future.
Atkinson’s hiring marks a pivotal moment in Cleveland’s offseason strategy, which also includes securing long-term commitments from key players like All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. Known for his offensive acumen and player development prowess, Atkinson brings a steady hand to a franchise eager to make deeper postseason runs.
His tenure with the Brooklyn Nets, although marked by a sudden departure amidst organizational changes, demonstrated his ability to cultivate team cohesion and tactical innovation. Under Atkinson’s guidance, the Nets pioneered a faster-paced, three-point shooting style that has since become a hallmark of successful NBA teams.
With the Cavaliers poised for further growth, Atkinson’s appointment represents a calculated move by team ownership and management to build upon recent successes and establish a sustainable competitive edge in the league.
